Suddenly cannot edit a Word document

I've been working on a document for months, and suddenly I cannot highlight sections in order to move sections around. I am the only author. Could I have inadvertently clicked something to make it "read only" or removed my editing privileges? At the same time, my font was greatly minimized, so that I could barely read it, which makes me think I may have hit something by mistake. My subscription is up to date. Any ideas? Thanks

Several things in Word can suddenly make a long‑working document behave as if it is read‑only or not editable, especially if a key or mode was toggled accidentally. Work through these checks:

    1. Confirm it’s not opening as “view only” or read‑only
    • In Word, go to File > Info.
    • If Always open view-only or Always open Read-Only is turned on, clear it.
    • Also select Protect Document and make sure Always Open Read-Only is not selected.
    1. Check the editing mode in the top-right
    • In the upper-right corner of the document window, look for a drop-down that may say Viewing or Reviewing.
    • Change it to Editing.
    • If Editing is not available, the document may have restrictions set by protection or sharing.
    1. Check for Restrict Editing protection
    • Go to the Review tab.
    • Select Protect > Restrict Editing.
    • If Allow only this type of editing in the document is checked and set to No changes (Read only), select Stop Protection (and enter the password if one was set) to restore full editing.
    1. If parts of the document are locked
    • On Review > Protect > Restrict Editing, use Find Next Region I Can Edit or Show All Regions I Can Edit to see if only some regions are editable.
    1. Font suddenly very small
    • This is usually a zoom or view change, not a permissions issue.
    • Adjust the zoom slider in the bottom-right corner of Word back to 100% (or your preferred level).

If after these steps the document still won’t allow editing and Editing mode is unavailable, the file may have additional restrictions (for example, Information Rights Management) or be affected by how it’s stored, and the owner or admin would need to change those settings. Since this is a personal Mac and the subscription is current, the most likely causes are the view-only/read-only toggles or Restrict Editing being turned on by accident.
