MS Word Text appears to be different sizes although it isn't

Why does the text on my Word document look as if the fonts are different sizes?

The headings are bold and one size larger than the paragraph text, but in some cases they appear much smaller.

Text within a paragraph can appear bigger or smaller than other text.

When I click an individual word, it shows the formatting that I want, but the document doesn't look the way I want.

If I close the document and reopen it, then it looks fine.

I'm using Microsoft 365 and I updated the software yesterday.

What in the world is going on? I'm losing my mind! It's so hard to work like this when text appears to keep changing sizes on you?!!??

I did not change any of the settings.

Please help!

Hi, this looks like a Word display issue after editing.

Does the problem happen when you zoom in or out?

Go to File > Options > General and turn off Optimize for compatibility, then restart Word. Next go to File > Options > Advanced > Display and enable Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen. If available, also disable graphics acceleration there. These steps reset how Word renders text and fix inconsistent font display.

Hi, do you see this issue in all documents or only in one file?

This usually relates to a display or rendering issue after an update. Try switching the view and forcing Word to refresh. Go to the View tab and switch to Print Layout, then change the zoom level slightly. If it continues, go to File > Options > Advanced, scroll to Display, then check Disable hardware graphics acceleration and restart Word. Also update Office again from File > Account > Update Options > Update Now to ensure all fixes are applied.
