Remap or disable 'Copilot' chatbot key on new Windows keyboards

Recently Microsoft has partnered with manufacturers to add new chatbot keys in place of the old commonly used menu/ right control key.

I've been getting more and more calls from customers of new laptops complaining about this chatbot key and wanting it turned off. This has lead to one ripping the key off, three returning their laptops, and two downloading possibly dangerous third party programs to remap this key.

It appears there is no settings in Windows to make this key usable for anything the customer actually wants it for. It's just begging to be accidentally tapped so the user can get advertisements delivered to them via a chatbot.

So how can we disable/remap this unwelcome key on Windows keyboards?

    Hello, Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Thanks for your feedbackI think you're having trouble with the Copilot key on your keyboard.

You can use the keyboard-manager feature in Microsoft PowerToys tool to remap or disable the Copilot chatbot key on your Windows keyboard. Here are the steps:

    1. Download and install the Microsoft PowerToys tool from the official Microsoft website.
    2. Open the PowerToys tool and select the "Keyboard Manager" tab.
    3. Click on the "Remap a key" button.
    4. Choose the Copilot chatbot key from the "Physical Key" dropdown menu.
    5. Select the key or function you want to remap the Copilot chatbot key to from the "Mapped To" dropdown menu.
    6. Click "OK" to save the changes.

If you want to completely disable the Copilot chatbot key, you can remap it to the "Disabled" option.

You can download the tool from the following link: https://dori-uw-1.kuma-moon.com/windows/powertoys/

If you are indeed using a Surface product, you can purchase the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard separately to replace the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard.

If my understanding is wrong, please point it out, so that I can assist you better.

G-D BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why oh why did I have to spend so much of my life searching for an answer that actually WORKED??? Why are these ridiculous problems built into computer products these days??? Is most of the population just totally thrilled to have no Ctrl (right) key?????

G-d bless you! Thanks for taking the time to guide us frustrated souls to the solution.

Zero people ask for Microsoft to ram through these changes on everyone. No one will use the co-pilot key because no one is impressed with a censored version of chatGPT, they have constrained their bot so much, it is more worthless than Cortana was, it's more in peoples way than Clippy was back in 1997. This will go down worse than the Office and Emoji key Microsoft attempted to put on all their keyboards.

You know what I noticed at Best Buy? All the Surface keyboards out on display have missing keys at the bottom. They weren't missing before the chatbot was forced on everyone. That is how far people are going, they are prying keys off display models so they can replace the unwanted chatbot key with a useful one.

I have old people asking me how to change or disable the chatbot key, a couple of my clients have totally removed the key from their keyboard. Brilliant move, Microsoft, absolutely brilliant move. Zero people asked for this low IQ change.

    Unbelievable...

Now just one more question. The key has successfully been redirected to act as ctrl and it's working in most respects. I can use it to zoom in and out (ctrl +, and ctrl -) but for some reason it's not working as ctrl + enter. The left ctrl does work in ctrl + enter.

If anyone has had the same issue and found a resolution, kindly advise.

I tried the PowerToys option with a new Dell Precision laptop. Although the app indicated that the Copilot key (F23) could not be remapped, I was able to disable it.
