Remap or disable 'Copilot' chatbot key on new Windows keyboards

Recently Microsoft has partnered with manufacturers to add new chatbot keys in place of the old commonly used menu/ right control key.

I've been getting more and more calls from customers of new laptops complaining about this chatbot key and wanting it turned off. This has lead to one ripping the key off, three returning their laptops, and two downloading possibly dangerous third party programs to remap this key.

It appears there is no settings in Windows to make this key usable for anything the customer actually wants it for. It's just begging to be accidentally tapped so the user can get advertisements delivered to them via a chatbot.

So how can we disable/remap this unwelcome key on Windows keyboards?

    Hello, Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Thanks for your feedbackI think you're having trouble with the Copilot key on your keyboard.

You can use the keyboard-manager feature in Microsoft PowerToys tool to remap or disable the Copilot chatbot key on your Windows keyboard. Here are the steps:

    1. Download and install the Microsoft PowerToys tool from the official Microsoft website.
    2. Open the PowerToys tool and select the "Keyboard Manager" tab.
    3. Click on the "Remap a key" button.
    4. Choose the Copilot chatbot key from the "Physical Key" dropdown menu.
    5. Select the key or function you want to remap the Copilot chatbot key to from the "Mapped To" dropdown menu.
    6. Click "OK" to save the changes.

If you want to completely disable the Copilot chatbot key, you can remap it to the "Disabled" option.

You can download the tool from the following link: https://dori-uw-1.kuma-moon.com/windows/powertoys/

If you are indeed using a Surface product, you can purchase the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard separately to replace the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard.

If my understanding is wrong, please point it out, so that I can assist you better.

Mine opens the personalization menu. While less intrusive, it is as disruptive, and the provided solution does not work. Remapping through powertoys (both 'F23' and 'App/Menu' to disabled) doesn't work, and the personalization menu itself only lets me change the result to the aforementioned chatbot. Remapping the shortcut (win + shift + f23) worked for all of an hour before reverting despite everything being set up and multiple restarting of the malsoftware. I have recoursed to prying off the key for now, the alternative being more violent actions.

Of note, the keyboard allows me to 'lock' the Fn key, which should make this key work as the Menu key (opening the contextual menu of wherever my cursor is). For some obscure reason this key dares to ignore the lock, and I would have to hold the Fn key for it to work properly. We're reaching levels of deliberately obtuse design I didn't think were possible.

I bought a new PC and discovered the CoPilot key by hitting it when I intended to hit the right CTRL, and I keep on hitting it because of 3O+ years of typing habits. Tried PowerToys but found that the 'fix' will go away if you turn off or uninstall Powertoys, so I consider it a non-solution. I could try relearning my typing habits as I did with the Windows Key(that STILL trips me up!), but it's easier to buy a new keyboard. WITHOUT a damn CoPilot key.

If you are running Windows 11, and update 24h2 then M$ has an option to change the Co-pilot key in settings, hooray!

Settings > Personalisation > Scroll down to Customise Copilot key on keyboard

    How to with screen-shots here:

It only lets you "choose" the chatbot. If you unselect it then clicking the key on accident brings up that personalization menu instead, urging you to turn the chatbot back on.
