Licensing overview

The information in this article doesn't apply to the Dragon Copilot (radiologists) capability.

This article provides detailed information on licensing for Microsoft Dragon Copilot, including the types of licenses available, purchase options, and how to view licenses across your organization. For more information, see the Microsoft Dragon Copilot Licensing Guide.

Types of Dragon Copilot licenses

Dragon Copilot offers the following license options:

Dragon Copilot (Physician Per User) Per user Clinical workflows for patient-provider interaction, e.g. physician workflow. A single-user license that provides all Dragon Copilot features for clinical workflows, including documentation, ambient signal capture, insights, and generative summarization, without requiring an Azure subscription for consumption‑based metering.

This license type is recommended for customers who want to provide Dragon Copilot patient-provider interaction features with a single-user subscription license. It supports broad adoption of Dragon Copilot features by physicians and other relevant clinicians in an organization.
- Direct customer agreement with Microsoft

- Customer contracting with a Microsoft certified partner
Dragon Copilot (Physician Flex) Per user Clinical workflows for patient-provider interaction, e.g. physician workflow. Enables dictation capability (frontend speech) per user per month across the organization.

In addition, admins can enable physician capabilities such as ambient recording and generative AI for individual users, which are charged on a pay-as-you-go basis.

To use ambient and AI features, you need to link an Azure subscription to your environment.

This license type is recommended for:

- Health systems transitioning from Nuance Dragon Medical One, needing lower upfront cost with usage‑based billing.
- Organizations with high variability in ambient and AI usage across clinicians.
- Customers who want to start with core dictation functionality and scale AI consumption gradually.
- Direct customer agreement with Microsoft

- Customer contracting with a Microsoft certified partner
Physician PAYG consumption unit Consumption Clinical workflows for patient-provider interaction, e.g. physician workflow. Enables users with a Dragon Copilot Flex license to access all ambient and AI features but only pay for the features used. Requires linking an Azure subscription to your environment. - Direct customer agreement with Microsoft

- Customer contracting with a Microsoft certified partner
Dragon Copilot (Physician Practice Per User) Per user Clinical workflows for patient-provider interaction, e.g. physician workflow. A small‑to‑medium business license designed specifically for physician practices and small hospitals with 100 clinicians or fewer. It provides nearly the full physician user feature set of Dragon Copilot (dictation, ambient recording, generative AI, and core administrative capabilities) at a lower price point. It reduces the need for advanced enterprise‑level administrative tasks to match the simpler needs of smaller organizations.

This license type is recommended for:

- Independent practices.
- Clinics or hospitals with up to 100 clinicians.
- Customers purchasing through resellers.
- Direct customer agreement with Microsoft

- Customer contracting with a Microsoft certified partner
Dragon Copilot (Nurse Per User) Per user Nursing workflow, including flowsheets. Enables nursing capabilities for Dragon Copilot embedded and the standalone web and desktop apps.

This license type is recommended for customers who want to enable Dragon Copilot for nursing staff (including RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and PCTs) using flowsheet-based workflows.

Purchase Dragon Copilot licenses

Identify the type of billing account you have in Microsoft 365:

  • If you have a Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) or Microsoft Customer Agreement for Enterprise (MCA-E), contact your Microsoft representative to purchase licenses. This purchasing channel is available for nursing and physician licenses.

  • If you're a customer working with a certified Microsoft partner (also known as a Cloud Solution Provider or CSP), contact your partner to purchase and manage your licenses. This purchasing channel is only available for physician licenses.

Once the purchase is complete, you can start administering your licenses.

Note

If your organization is a first-time Microsoft 365 customer, either your partner or you and your Microsoft representative will set up your free Microsoft 365 subscription and free Entra account. If your organization is an existing Microsoft 365 customer, you might have multiple subscriptions and Entra tenants. Work with your Microsoft representative to set up your organization in Microsoft 365.
