Just 2 days ago, I noticed that the caution sound was not working.

The audio is working when I open a video, so the sound is not mute

I ran the troubleshoot more than one time , but it did not solve the problem, though the test was working well hearing me the sound.

Moreover, I looked into the device manager and tested the audio devices and both looked fine and updated.

It is already I hear a caution sound whenever I look for a word into my Word document, but now I hear nothing- it is the same we hear the sound when we look for a word using Google chrome -- find and edit --- find , and if the word we look for , is not found in that page or text, the windows let us hear a sound.

So how do I fix it ?

    Hi,

It's possible the system sounds are muted.

Go to Start Menu > Settings > System > Sound > Sound Control Panel > Sounds Tab > check if the selection box shows "Windows Defaults" > if most have a sound icon, apply it.

If so, go to Start Menu > Settings > System > Sound > Volume Mixer > System Sound and check if it's at 100% and unmute.

Check the following in Windows 10 to restore the “caution” (system notification) sound while keeping normal audio (videos, etc.) working:

    1. Verify the correct output device
      1. Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
      2. Select the arrow to open the list of audio devices.
      3. Make sure the usual speakers/headphones are selected as the output device.
    2. Check physical volume and mute
      1. Confirm speakers/headphones are firmly connected and powered on.
      2. Make sure no hardware mute button is enabled and volume knobs are turned up.
      3. In Windows, ensure the main volume is not muted and is set high enough.
    3. Update or reinstall the audio driver
      1. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager and open it.
      2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. Right‑click the audio device (for example, speakers/headphones) and select Update driverSearch automatically for updated driver software and complete the wizard.
      4. If no newer driver is found and the issue persists, right‑click the same device → Uninstall device → check Delete the driver software for this deviceUninstall.
      5. Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the audio driver automatically.
    4. Try the generic Windows audio driver
      1. Open Device Manager again and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right‑click the sound device → Update driverBrowse my computer for driversLet me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
      3. Select the generic audio driver offered and complete installation.
    5. Make sure Windows is fully updated and restarted
      1. Go to StartSettingsUpdate & SecurityWindows UpdateCheck for updates.
      2. Install all available updates and restart the PC.
      3. If Update and restart or Update and shut down appears under StartPower, choose one of those so audio‑related updates are applied.

If the caution sound still does not play after these steps, use System Restore to roll back to a point when the sound was working, following the guidance under “Restore from a system restore point” in the recovery options article referenced below.
