So, I have got a school email account. When I try to sign in, I enter my email and the password. Afterwards, Microsoft Authenticator opens itself and it shows me a two-digit number. But I cant put the number anywhere in and it doesnt show me another solution. If I open the Authenticator, it states: Sign in to add your account. But I cant sign in because in order to sign in I have to put those numbers somewhere in and it just wont show where I can do this. Please help me, I need to have accses to this email address as soon as possible!!!!

    Dear @Florian Gabriel,

    I hope you’re having a good day.

If you're using a work or school account, please note that MFA settings are typically managed by your organization's IT administrator. In this case, I recommend contacting your admin to verify your MFA configuration or reset your authentication methods. Once you are able to reach your school’s IT administrator or help desk, this issue can usually be fixed within a few minutes.

So please don’t worry, this is a common situation, and it’s typically resolved very quickly once the admin resets the authentication method.

Your administrator can follow the guidance in the following article: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multi-factor authentication

If you’re unsure who your administrator is, this article may help: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin?

Please note that this is a user‑to‑user support forum, and moderators don’t have access to school accounts or the ability to reset authentication methods on your behalf. Your school’s IT team is the only group that can resolve this.

I really hope this information helps you get access restored quickly. If the answer above is helpful, you may consider marking it as the accepted answer, this helps make the solution more visible and can assist others who encounter the same issue.

I wish you a fast resolution and successful access to your email.

    Warm regards,

For a school (work or school/Entra ID) account, this loop happens when Microsoft Authenticator is the only multifactor method and it is not set up correctly on the new device.

Because this is a school account, only the organization’s IT administrator can properly reset the multifactor authentication (MFA) settings if there is no alternative sign-in method available.

    Use these steps:

    1. On the sign-in screen, after entering email and password, look carefully for any option like “Use a different verification option” or similar. If available, choose another method (SMS, call, backup email, hardware token, etc.) and sign in that way.
    2. If another method works and sign-in succeeds, go to the security/MFA settings page for the account and reconfigure Microsoft Authenticator (remove the old phone entry and add the new one by scanning the QR code when prompted).
    3. If there is no other method and the sign-in always sends back to Authenticator where it says “Sign in to add your account,” contact the school/organization IT help desk or Microsoft 365/Entra administrator and ask them to reset your multifactor authentication settings. They can do this from the Microsoft Entra admin center by requiring re-registration of MFA for the account.
    4. After the admin resets MFA, sign in again with email and password; the system should prompt to set up Authenticator from scratch with a QR code instead of showing an un-usable two-digit number.

If the account is a personal Microsoft account instead of school, use the Sign-in Helper to diagnose and recover access: I can't sign in to my Microsoft account.
