Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.
A much higher Unread number on the new PC (New Outlook) compared to iPhone/iPad/your old PC is usually not caused by “Microsoft 365 vs a one-time Outlook purchase.” More commonly, it happens because New Outlook/Outlook on the web may count unread items across a broader set of folders, or because the unread counter in New Outlook is not refreshing consistently.
Please try the steps below (quick/easy first):
1. Compare with Outlook on the web (OWA) to identify where the count comes from
Sign in to your mailbox in Outlook on the web.
- If OWA matches New Outlook on the new PC, it usually means the unread count is being calculated with a broader scope.
- If OWA matches your iPhone/iPad/old PC, it points more to New Outlook on the new PC showing an unread counter that isn’t syncing/refreshing correctly.
2. Check which folder the unread items are in (not just Inbox)
- On the new PC, expand all folders and look for any folder showing an unread number (Archive/Junk/Deleted/custom folders, etc.).
- If you have Focused/Other, please check the Other tab as well—messages can land there and increase the unread total while you’re only viewing Focused.
3. Use search/filter to surface unread items
- Use search or a filter to show Unread only, to confirm which messages are being counted and which folder they’re in.
4. If you still can’t find the “extra unread” anywhere
- This may be related to the New Outlook unread items counter not updating reliably. If this mismatch continues to occur, please contact Microsoft Support for further investigation.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any further updates, thanks.
