Move To search function in Sharepoint Online

Our users are unable to use the search function when moving files between Sharepoint Online sites, libraries and folders. The libraries can be navigated manually, but when using the search function we get this a mess that says "Try Refreshing the Page" and "Failed to execute 'json' on 'Response': Unexpected end of JSON input Correlation ID: [Moderator note: personal info removed]."

It's not a permissions issue- the functionality worked fine up until this week and now all users are getting this message. It also does not seem to matter which site we are trying to search or move files to.

    Dear @Arwen,

Good day, and I appreciate the clear explanation of your concern.

Based on the details you shared, including the fact that the issue started recently, affects all users, occurs across different sites, libraries, folders and only impacts search within the “Move to” pane while manual browsing still works, I tested the same scenario in my own environment. I was able to reproduce the exact behavior you described.

At this time, I don’t see any related advisories or incidents listed in the Microsoft 365 admin center. However, this does not necessarily mean the issue doesn't exist, as it may currently affect only a small number of users and hasn‘t yet been widely reported.

    • Given the circumstances, I sincerely recommend reaching out to your IT administrator to create a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Support > Help & Support for further investigation.

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

This forum is a community-driven space where users share experiences and general guidance with one another. It isn't directly monitored by Microsoft product teams for formal investigation or issue tracking.

I would like to clarify that my role is limited to sharing public documentation, testing observations, and general troubleshooting guidance. I don't have access to internal diagnostic tools, engineering backlogs, or build level investigations. Because of that, I am not able to confirm whether this behavior is linked to a known product issue or bug.

Also, as many members of the community may not yet be aware of this behavior. Sharing or highlighting this response can help bring greater visibility to the issue, making it easier for others who are experiencing similar challenges to find relevant information and support.

I hope this helps clarify the current situation and the available next steps. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The error message indicates a SharePoint Online search issue rather than a permissions problem. The context available only covers general causes for missing or failing search in SharePoint Online, not this specific JSON error in the Move To dialog. Based on the available information, the supported actions are:

    1. Verify that the content being searched is actually searchable and indexed:
      • Confirm users have permission to the destination sites and libraries; search will not return items users cannot view.
      • If the destination content is new, wait for search indexing to complete and test again.
      • Be aware that only major versions of documents are returned in search, not minor versions.
    2. If search continues to fail across sites and libraries for all users, this points to a broader search issue in the tenant. In that case, SharePoint administrators should:
      • Review search configuration and ensure content on the affected sites is enabled to be searchable.
      • Use the guidance for missing search results in SharePoint Online to investigate crawl latency or configuration problems.
      • If necessary, reindex affected sites or libraries and then test search again.
    3. If the problem persists after confirming permissions, searchability, and reindexing, contact a SharePoint administrator or Microsoft support to investigate the tenant-level search service, providing the correlation ID from the error.
