Favorites keep reappearing after deletion

I deleted many favorites from edge to only have them reappear a few minutes later, often corrupted and pointing to incorrect pages / folders.

How can I permanently delete favorites and stop the proliferation / recreation?

    Hi,

This is usually a sync problem. When sync is on, it pulls data from all your devices using the same account. So if another device still has those old or broken entries, they’ll just pop back in after sync. Basically, if the synced data itself isn’t cleaned up, your changes won’t stick. To resolve this, go to Settings > Profiles > Sync. After deleting your Favorites, use the Re-sync now option to try and update your Favorites list. If it doesn't work, use the Reset sync data from Microsoft servers. Keep in mind that the reset option will delete your data stored on the server, including your Workspaces and the Favorites inside them. If you don’t use Workspaces, you’re fine. But if you do, it’s a good idea to back up your Favorites first using this extension so you can export them per workspace, since you’ll need to set everything up again afterward. If you want help with it, just let me know so I can guide you through the process.

To permanently delete favorites and stop them from reappearing, remove them from all synced locations and ensure sync is correctly configured.

    1. Check if favorites sync is on
      • In Microsoft Edge, select Settings and more (⋯) > Settings.
      • Go to the account/profile section and open Sync settings.
      • If Favorites sync is turned on, Edge will merge favorites from all devices signed in with the same account.
    2. Clean up favorites on one device
      • On the main PC, open Settings and more (⋯) > Favorites.
      • In the Favorites window, use the tree on the left (for example Other favorites) to locate items.
      • Delete unwanted favorites and folders there so the “master” set is correct on that device.
    3. Let sync propagate
      • Keep Edge open and connected so changes sync to the cloud and to other devices.
      • On other devices (PCs or mobile):
        • Ensure they are signed in with the same Microsoft account.
        • Confirm Sync is turned on and includes Favorites.
        • After sync completes, check that the deleted favorites are gone.
    4. If corrupted/old data keeps coming back
      • Temporarily turn off Favorites sync on all devices.
      • On one device, clean up favorites again until they are correct.
      • Then re‑enable Favorites sync on that device first, wait for it to upload, and finally turn sync back on for other devices so they download the cleaned set.
    5. If needed, clear old Edge data
      • In Edge, go to Settings and more (⋯) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data.
      • Use All data from the previous version of Microsoft Edge if present, to remove legacy data that might be reintroducing old favorites.

This process ensures favorites are managed on the local device while sync keeps them consistent across devices, preventing deleted or corrupted entries from reappearing.
