On Word for Mac, the Delete key has backspace function. But in a text I'm editing, it fails sometimes, in particular it won't move a completed line partially upward to finished the partly empty line of continuous text above. What's the solution?

Click the ¶ icon on the Home tab to display nonprinting characters. This should provide a clearer view of what you are dealing with (content, formatting etc.). A screen shot may help forum contributors diagnose the issue.

In Word for Mac, this behavior is usually caused by something in the layout that prevents text from flowing normally, rather than a fault with the Delete (backspace) key itself. Common causes and fixes include:

    1. Inline object on the line
A shape, line, or other object that is “in line with text” can act like a large character and force the preceding word onto a separate line, so Delete appears to “fail.”
      Fix:
      • Click immediately after the last word on the problem line.
      • Press Enter to insert a paragraph mark so the shape/object sits in its own paragraph.
      • The text should then reflow normally and Delete will again pull text up to fill the line.
    2. Section or page breaks
A manual page break or section break between lines will stop text from moving up, even when pressing Delete.
      • On Mac, go to Home and select Show/Hide to display formatting marks.
      • If a Page Break or Section Break appears between the lines:
        • For a page break: select it and press Delete.
        • For a section break: select it and press Delete. Be aware that deleting a section break merges sections and applies the formatting of the following section to the combined text.
    3. Manual page breaks in Word for the web (if editing online)
If the document is being edited in Word for the web and a manual page break is present:
      • Switch to Editing View (Edit Document > Edit in Word for the web).
      • Click the page break and press Backspace.
Note that automatic page breaks added by Word cannot be deleted.

If none of these are present, turn on Show/Hide and look carefully for any hidden break or object at the end of the line that might be blocking the text from moving up.
