In Word for Mac, this behavior is usually caused by something in the layout that prevents text from flowing normally, rather than a fault with the Delete (backspace) key itself. Common causes and fixes include:
- Inline object on the line
A shape, line, or other object that is “in line with text” can act like a large character and force the preceding word onto a separate line, so Delete appears to “fail.”
Fix:
- Click immediately after the last word on the problem line.
- Press Enter to insert a paragraph mark so the shape/object sits in its own paragraph.
- The text should then reflow normally and Delete will again pull text up to fill the line.
- Section or page breaks
A manual page break or section break between lines will stop text from moving up, even when pressing Delete.
- On Mac, go to Home and select Show/Hide to display formatting marks.
- If a Page Break or Section Break appears between the lines:
- For a page break: select it and press Delete.
- For a section break: select it and press Delete. Be aware that deleting a section break merges sections and applies the formatting of the following section to the combined text.
- Manual page breaks in Word for the web (if editing online)
If the document is being edited in Word for the web and a manual page break is present:
- Switch to Editing View (Edit Document > Edit in Word for the web).
- Click the page break and press Backspace.
Note that automatic page breaks added by Word cannot be deleted.
If none of these are present, turn on Show/Hide and look carefully for any hidden break or object at the end of the line that might be blocking the text from moving up.
