Use two separate steps: (1) make sure the GoDaddy domain is correctly connected to Microsoft 365, and (2) fix Outlook on Windows so it uses the right mailbox instead of a temporary/Outlook.com one.
1. Connect the GoDaddy domain to Microsoft 365
If the domain is already with GoDaddy and is meant to be used for Microsoft 365 mail, the DNS records at GoDaddy must point to Microsoft 365.
At a high level (from the GoDaddy side):
- Sign in to GoDaddy and open My Products.
- Under Domains, next to the domain used for mail, select … → Edit DNS.
- Under Records, ensure the Microsoft 365 records exist, in particular:
- MX record for
@ pointing to *<domain-key>*.mail.protection.outlook.com with a priority like 10 and TTL 1 hour.
- CNAME record
autodiscover pointing to autodiscover.outlook.com with TTL 1 hour.
If these records are missing or still set to GoDaddy’s default mail, add or correct them using the Microsoft 365 values. The MX and autodiscover CNAME are the key ones for Outlook connectivity.
If the domain was originally set up as a personalized Outlook.com address (Outlook.com Premium) rather than Microsoft 365:
- If the domain was provided by Microsoft, it must first be transferred to GoDaddy via the premium features section in Outlook.com, then a Microsoft 365 subscription is required to keep using that personalized address.
- If the domain was purchased directly from a registrar (like GoDaddy), only a Microsoft 365 subscription is needed; management then happens from the premium features section of Outlook.com.
2. Fix Outlook on Windows using the wrong/temporary mailbox
The “New Outlook” can sometimes connect to a temporary Outlook.com mailbox or the wrong account, especially when domains are tied to Outlook.com/GoDaddy.
To get Classic Outlook using the proper Microsoft 365 mailbox again (hosted on the GoDaddy/Microsoft 365 domain):
- Close Outlook completely.
- In Task Manager, make sure there are no
OUTLOOK.EXE processes still running; end them if present.
- Open Control Panel → Mail → Show Profiles….
- Remove any problem profiles that are using a temporary Outlook.com address or the wrong account.
- Click Add…, create a new profile, and add only the Microsoft 365 mailbox for the GoDaddy domain (e.g.
******@yourdomain.com). Let automatic setup run so it uses the autodiscover DNS record.
- Set this new profile as the default and start Outlook with it.
If the New Outlook “permissions” error is tied to a GoDaddy-default mailbox, ensure that:
- The Microsoft 365 subscription is active on the correct Microsoft account.
- The domain is correctly configured and associated with that subscription (not just with GoDaddy’s default email service).
If the domain was previously used as a personalized Outlook.com address and then removed or DNS records were cleared, it may be necessary to transfer the domain to GoDaddy (if it came from Microsoft) and then reconnect it to Outlook/Microsoft 365 following the personalized email/domain guidance.
If IMAP/POP is being used instead of Exchange/Modern Outlook connectivity and there are sync errors, reconfigure the account to use the proper Microsoft 365/Exchange connection rather than IMAP, as Outlook.com/GoDaddy IMAP can have limitations.
