what is a formula I can put in my quick access toolbar that after pressing enter the selection moves to the right or down or up or left? I had it set up by pressing a arrow direction in the toolbar but it has disappeared!

    Hi Brian,

In Excel, the direction your selection moves after pressing Enter isn’t controlled by a formula but by a built‑in setting. You can adjust this by going to File → Options → Advanced → Editing options and changing the “After pressing Enter, move selection” dropdown to Down, Right, Up, or Left. If you previously had arrow buttons in your Quick Access Toolbar to switch directions quickly, those were shortcuts to this same setting. To restore them, open the Quick Access Toolbar menu, choose More Commands, set “Choose commands from” to All Commands, then scroll down to find Move Selection Right/Left/Up/Down and add them back. Once re‑added, you’ll have the arrow icons again, and clicking them will instantly change the Enter key’s movement direction without needing to reopen Excel Options.

    Hi Brian Samuell,

This isn’t controlled by a formula in Excel.

In Excel for Windows, this behavior is handled by a built‑in setting:

    1. Go to File > Options > Advanced
    2. Under Editing options, make sure After pressing Enter, move selection is checked
    3. Choose the direction you want (Down, Right, Left, or Up)

If the direction button you previously used on the Quick Access Toolbar disappeared, you can add it back:

    • Go to Quick Access Toolbar > More Commands
    • Set the dropdown to All Commands
    • Look for Direction: Up / Down / Left / Right
    • Add the one you want back to the toolbar

Tip: If you only want to move one cell to the right while entering data, pressing Tab is often the quickest option.

Let me know if you need help setting this up again or if the toolbar option is still missing.

Please let me know if this proves useful to you, or if you would like further assistance.

I'm looking forward to your reply.
