Backup surface pro files on OneDrive

To sync Surface Pro files to OneDrive, either use Windows Backup (simplest) or the OneDrive desktop app’s folder backup.

Option 1: Use Windows Backup to OneDrive

This backs up key user folders (Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music) from the Surface to OneDrive.

1. On the Surface Pro, select Start.
2. Type backup, then select Windows Backup from the results.
3. Under Folders, expand the list.
4. Turn On the toggles for the folders to back up (for example Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music).
5. Sign in with a Microsoft account if prompted.

Windows Backup will sync those folders to OneDrive using the signed-in Microsoft account. Files will then be available on any device where that account is signed in to OneDrive.

Tip: The same settings can be managed at Settings > Accounts > Windows backup.

Option 2: Use the OneDrive desktop app (Sync and backup)

This gives more direct control from OneDrive.

1. Make sure OneDrive is running:
   • On Windows 11, OneDrive is built in. Look for the cloud icon in the taskbar notification area, or select Start and search for OneDrive and open it.
   • If needed, install the app using the download link in the OneDrive documentation.
2. When OneDrive opens the first time, sign in with a Microsoft, work, or school account.
3. To turn on automatic backup of important PC folders:
   • Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
   • Select the OneDrive Settings icon, then Settings.
   • Go to the Sync and backup tab and select Manage backup.
   • Turn on the toggles for Desktop, Documents, and Pictures (or any available folders to back up).
   • Select Save changes.

Once enabled, files saved in those folders on the Surface Pro will automatically sync to OneDrive. Changes made offline will sync when the Surface reconnects to the internet.

Accessing synced files

After setup, files are:

• Visible in File Explorer under the OneDrive node.
• Available on other PCs or the web when signed in with the same account.
