OneDrive Version History does not appear

When I ask to log onto OneDrive my browser automatically brings up the logon screen for Microsoft. When I log on, I believe I am looking immediately at the OneDrive list of recently used files. When I right click on the recently used file, I get the very short picklist but no Version History selection.

After reading your comments, I went into File Explorer and clicked on OneDrive. The message that came up was "Your files are synched." Then in File Explorer I right clickeded on my recently used file, and I got the long picklist which included the Version History selection.

So my problem was resolved. BUT, when yesterday I followed Microsoft's Help instructions and logged into OneDrive (I believe) and right clicked my recently used file, I did NOT get the long picklist or Version History. Please explain where thiis went wrong to help me better understand OneDrive.

Looks like what you experienced yesterday could be explained by the difference between accessing OneDrive via the web interface versus via the local synced folder in File Explorer. When you log into OneDrive in your browser and go directly to “Recent” or the web-based file list, the context menu is intentionally simplified. Microsoft designed it this way because web access, especially in the “Recent” view, prioritizes quick actions like Open or Share. Certain features, including Version History, are either hidden in deeper menus or only available when you are in the full file list view on the web. In other words, right-clicking in Recent on the web is not equivalent to right-clicking a file in its actual storage location.

By contrast, when you access OneDrive through File Explorer, you are interacting with the locally synced copy of your OneDrive files. Windows integrates additional functionality in the right-click menu for files stored in OneDrive, including Version History, because it can communicate directly with the OneDrive sync client. This is why you saw the long picklist and could access Version History there.

So the key difference is the context in which you right-clicked the file. “Recent” views, whether in the browser or in Office apps, offer a limited set of actions. Full OneDrive features, such as Version History, require either navigating to the file’s actual location in the OneDrive web file list or using the locally synced folder in File Explorer. Yesterday, following Microsoft’s Help instructions likely kept you in the Recent or web-based view, which only shows the short menu, preventing Version History from appearing.

If you want consistent access to Version History, always navigate to the file in File Explorer or the full OneDrive folder view in your browser, rather than relying on Recent.
