Logged out of all accounts after PC restart

I restarted my computer today in order to deal with a bug on MS Edge, and for some reason I was logged out of all my accounts throughout various websites. This has happened before and is rare, and there is no consistency to it as far as I'm aware.

And yes, my settings are normal, there no settings turned on or off that would log me out of these sites after restarting the computer.

    Hello Sean Wright,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

This behavior could cause by Edge settings, extension rules or profile issue. However, as you said this is rare and is not consistent, we could eliminate the settings issues.

Before we proceed further, can you please check and disable all third-party extension (if any) and monitor it to see if the issue happens again. Additionally, please try to create a new Edge profile and monitor ir to see if the new profile is stable.

    I'm waiting for your reply.

Losing sign-in sessions across many sites after a PC restart is typically caused by cookies or cached credentials being cleared, corrupted, or not persisted correctly, or by profile/credential issues in Microsoft Edge or Windows.

To troubleshoot and reduce the chance of this happening again, follow these steps in order and test after each:

    1. Clear and rebuild Edge’s cached sign-in data Even though this sounds counterintuitive, stale or corrupted cookies/tokens can cause repeated sign-outs.
      1. Open Edge and go to edge://settings/privacy.
      2. Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
      3. Select:
        • Cookies and other site data
        • Cached images and files
      4. Set Time range to All time.
      5. Select Clear now.
      6. Restart Edge and sign back in to your key sites so new cookies/tokens are created.
    2. Check Edge profile and sign-in status If Edge is switching profiles or a profile is broken, cookies may not persist as expected.
      1. Go to edge://settings/profiles.
      2. Confirm that the profile normally used is present and signed in.
      3. If there are extra or unexpected profiles (for example, a new “Profile 2”), remove the unneeded profile:
        • Select the extra profile.
        • Select Remove.
        • Restart Edge and continue using the main profile.
    3. Remove conflicting stored Windows credentials Conflicting or outdated credentials at OS level can interfere with web sign-in and session persistence.
      1. Open Control PanelCredential Manager.
      2. Under Windows Credentials and Generic Credentials, look for entries related to MicrosoftAccount or login.microsoftonline.com.
      3. Remove outdated or obviously duplicate/conflicting entries.
      4. Restart Edge and sign in again where needed.
    4. Make sure Edge and Windows account integration are healthy Problems with the Windows account or token broker can cause sign-in/session issues.
      1. Verify Windows account connection:
        • Go to SettingsAccountsYour info and confirm the account is connected.
        • For work/school accounts, go to SettingsAccountsAccess work or school and confirm the organization account is connected.
      2. Re-register the work/school account if applicable:
        • In Access work or school, select the account → Disconnect.
        • Then select Connect and sign in again.
      3. Reset the Token Broker service:
        • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
        • Run:
                  net stop TokenBroker
                  net start TokenBroker

        • Restart Edge and test sign-in persistence.
    5. Update Edge to the latest version An outdated Edge build can have sign-in/session bugs.
      1. In Edge, go to edge://settings/help.
      2. Let Edge check for and install updates.
      3. Restart Edge and verify whether sessions survive a Windows restart.
    6. If the problem persists intermittently
      • Run the Microsoft Account troubleshooter if available:
        • SettingsSystemTroubleshootOther troubleshootersMicrosoft Account.
      • If the issue continues and is disruptive, collect diagnostics before contacting support:
        • Edge version from edge://settings/help.
        • Applied policies from edge://policy.
        • Network trace from edge://net-export/ while reproducing the sign-out.
        • Identity status from edge://identity-internals/.

These steps address the main causes documented for repeated sign-in prompts and unexpected sign-outs in Edge: corrupted cookies, profile issues, conflicting credentials, outdated browser, and Windows account/token problems.
