To disconnect Copilot from a personal Microsoft 365 account and prevent it from using Outlook content, Copilot must be turned off in the Microsoft 365 apps and/or disabled via privacy settings.
For Outlook specifically (including Outlook on the web when signed in with the same personal account):
- Open Outlook (web or app) while signed in with the Microsoft account.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Copilot.
- Turn off the Turn on Copilot toggle.
- As of June 3, 2025, this toggle is available in:
- Outlook for Android: Quick Settings > Copilot
- Outlook for iOS: Quick Settings > Copilot
- Outlook for Mac: Quick Settings > Copilot
- Outlook on the web: Settings > Copilot
- New Outlook for Windows: Settings > Copilot
Turning off this toggle in Outlook applies to Outlook on all devices where that same account is used.
If Copilot controls are not visible in the apps, Copilot can be disabled by turning off content-analyzing connected experiences for the account. This affects Copilot and other AI features across Microsoft 365 apps (including Outlook suggestions and similar features):
On Windows (Word/Excel/PowerPoint as an example, but it applies account-wide):
- Open any Microsoft 365 app (for example, PowerPoint).
- Go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Under Connected experiences, clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
- Select OK, then close and restart the app.
- This change applies to other Microsoft 365 apps for that account the next time they are opened.
On Mac:
- Open any Microsoft 365 app (for example, Word).
- Go to the app menu > Preferences > Personal Settings > Privacy.
- In Privacy, go to Connected Experiences > Manage Connected Experiences.
- Clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
- Select OK, then close and restart the app.
- This change also propagates to other Microsoft 365 apps for that account.
If the goal is simply to avoid Copilot in Word/Excel/PowerPoint while keeping other connected experiences, Copilot can be turned off per app (on supported versions) instead of disabling all content-analyzing experiences:
- Ensure the app version supports the Enable Copilot checkbox (see version requirements in the reference article).
- In each app (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote on supported platforms), clear the Enable Copilot checkbox in that app’s Copilot settings.
- This must be done per app and per device.
Note that Copilot cannot be turned off in Designer, Notepad, or Paint, but those are separate from Outlook and Microsoft 365 email.
