It runs Windows11 Home on an ARM64 processor. My current HP printer only outputs landscape docs regardless of my Word or printer settings, for one of several problems.

The safest strategy for ARM64 is to choose a printer that supports driverless printing (IPP Everywhere / Mopria / AirPrint). These use Windows' built-in drivers and require zero vendor drivers — meaning no ARM64 compatibility headaches at all. Your landscape-only HP problem is almost certainly a driver bug, and driverless printing sidesteps that entirely.

Brother HL-L2395DW is probably your best bet for a small, hassle-free, properly-behaved BW laser on your Surface.

Windows 11 Arm-based PCs, including Surface devices with ARM64 processors, support most modern printers as long as:

    1. The printer uses drivers that are built into Windows 11, or
    2. The printer manufacturer provides Arm64-compatible drivers or a Printer Support App.

For a small black-and-white laser printer, focus on models that:

    1. Are Mopria certified (these generally work well with Windows 11 Arm-based PCs using built-in printing support).
    2. Have explicit Windows 11 support and, ideally, mention Arm64 support in the manufacturer’s documentation.

To check and connect a compatible printer:

    1. Verify Mopria certification
      • Go to the Mopria site listed in the FAQ and confirm the printer model is Mopria certified. Mopria-certified printers are supported by Windows 11 Arm-based PCs.
    2. Install the printer using Windows, not the manufacturer’s legacy installer
      • On the Surface:
        • Select Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
        • Select Add a printer or scanner and let Windows detect and install it.
      • This is the recommended method for Arm-based PCs instead of using the printer’s own installer, unless the manufacturer provides specific Arm64 guidance.
    3. If the printer does not connect automatically
      • Follow the guidance in Install a printer in Windows (linked from the ARM FAQ and printer troubleshooting articles) rather than using older setup programs.
    4. If there are printing issues (such as orientation problems like with the current HP)
      • Run the Windows printer troubleshooter from the Get Help app using the Run the troubleshooter in Get Help links in the printer articles.
      • If needed, remove the printer from Printers & scanners, restart the PC, and add it again so Windows can apply the correct driver.

Because specific printer models are not listed in the context, selection should be based on:

    • Mopria certification, and
    • Explicit Windows 11 support, with preference for vendors that provide Printer Support Apps for Windows.
