Dear @keri p,
I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. From what you’ve described, I understand that your OneDrive is currently showing much older versions of files, while newer work is no longer visible in version history or the recycle bin.
Before doing anything else, I recommend not making changes or edits to the affected files or folders, as further syncing
To help narrow down what may have happened, it would be useful to know:
Whether OneDrive was signed in on any older or rarely used computers
Whether any device was recently turned on or reconnected after a long time
Whether the files were accessed or edited from more than one device
Before doing anything else, the goal is to avoid further changes and carefully check what information is still available.
Please follow the steps below in order.
Step 1: Pause syncing on all devices (important)
To prevent any additional overwriting:
Pause OneDrive syncing on all computers
Avoid opening, editing, or saving the affected files for now
This helps keep the current state stable while we review what’s available.
Step 2: Check OneDrive directly on the web
Please sign in to OneDrive using a web browser (not File Explorer):
Go to your OneDrive online
Open the affected folders
Compare: File names, Modified dates, Folder structure
This confirms whether the older versions are coming from the cloud itself or from a specific device.
Step 3: Review Version History on a few key files
For a small number of important files:
Right‑click the file > Version history
Scroll through all available versions
Note the newest date shown and any large gaps
Even limited version information can help determine when the change occurred.
Step 4: Check the Recycle Bin
Please check:
The OneDrive Recycle Bin
If available, the second‑stage Recycle Bin
Even though this situation usually involves files being replaced rather than deleted, it’s still important to confirm.
Step 5: Do not reconnect other devices yet
If you have:
An older computer
A device you haven’t used in a long time
Please do not let it sync yet. If possible, check locally on that device first to see whether newer copies of your files still exist there.
Step 6: Look for any backups outside OneDrive
If you have any of the following, they may help: Local backups, External drives, Copies shared by email or messaging apps
In situations like this, recovery sometimes comes from outside OneDrive rather than from version history.
Important note about recovery
Some recovery options depend on how long ago the files were synchronized and what versions are still retained. In some cases, not all changes can be recovered. That’s why it’s important to proceed carefully and avoid making changes while these checks are being completed.
Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.
I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have any further questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
