    Hello

If you go to https://admin.microsoft.com > Users > Active Users, select this user, then go to Licenses & Apps tab, what licenses do this employee have?

    Dear @Jamie Sullivan,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that one of your employees is unable to sign in to Microsoft Teams on their mobile device, and the system is indicating that they need a license even though others are able to sign in without issues.

To move forward, could you please confirm the following information:

    • Does the affected employee have an active Microsoft 365 license assigned to their account?
    • Has the employee recently changed devices or had any account updates?
    • Are they able to sign in on the desktop version of Teams, or is the issue only happening on mobile?

Your confirmation would be very helpful in ensuring that you receive the most suitable support!

If you can share a little more about your situation, I might be able to suggest some helpful next steps.

Please understand that our initial response does not always solve the problem immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Please let me know when there are any updates or if you need further assistance. Any update you can share would be really helpful. Thank you for your time and I look forward to knowing how things are going!

Thank you for your time and patience.

The message about needing a license indicates that this specific employee either doesn’t have the required Microsoft 365/Teams license assigned, or is signing in with the wrong type of account on the phone.

    Check the following:

    1. Verify the correct account on the phone
      • On the mobile device, make sure the user is signing into the Teams app with the work account (the one that has Microsoft 365 assigned), not a personal Microsoft account.
      • If they see only Activity/Community/Chat/Calendar and no Teams app, or are missing work content, they may be signed in with a personal account and must switch to the work account.
    2. Confirm a valid Teams license is assigned
      • In the Microsoft 365 admin center, open Users > Active users, select this employee, and check Licenses and apps.
      • Ensure a license that includes Microsoft Teams is assigned (for example, a Microsoft 365 Apps for business or Enterprise license as required to use Teams).
      • If the user needs Teams Phone features (calling with a phone number), also ensure a Teams Phone license combination is assigned as per the Teams Phone licensing guidance.
    3. Compare with a working user
      • Open a user who can sign in successfully and compare the assigned licenses and apps with the affected user.
      • Align the affected user’s license assignments with the working user (where appropriate).
    4. Re-sign in on the mobile app
      • After confirming/fixing licensing, have the employee sign out of the Teams mobile app, close it, then sign back in with the licensed work account.

If the user still cannot sign in after confirming they have the same valid license as others and are using the correct work account, follow the guidance in “Why am I having trouble signing in to Microsoft Teams?” from the sign-in help article.
