Microsoft One Drive has somehow overwritten one of my key files with a document that is 2 years out of date. How can I get the current version of the file back?

    Hi!

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

OneDrive automatically keeps older versions of files. You can do this first:

Go to OneDrive in your browser (not Finder on Mac) and locate the file, do a right-click on Version history and look for a more recent version. If you find it, click restore.

This is the best way to recover it.

Use OneDrive’s versioning and restore features to get the newer copy back, either for just that file or, if many items were affected, for the whole OneDrive.

    1. Try restoring just that file from Version History (OneDrive / Office app)
      • If the file is stored in OneDrive and opened in Word/Excel/PowerPoint for Microsoft 365:
        1. Open the file (even if it shows the old content).
        2. Go to File > Info.
        3. Select Version History.
        4. In the Version History pane, select a more recent version (the one that matches your latest work) to preview it.
        5. Click Restore to make that version the current one.
      • Or from OneDrive in a browser / SharePoint library:
        1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 portal and browse to the OneDrive or SharePoint library that contains the file.
        2. Click the ellipses () next to the file and choose Version History.
        3. For the version that contains your current content, click the drop-down arrow and choose Restore, then OK.
    2. Try restoring via OneDrive Version History in Finder (File Explorer equivalent on Mac uses the sync client similarly)
      • If the OneDrive sync app is installed and the file is in the synced OneDrive folder:
        1. Right‑click the file in the OneDrive folder.
        2. Select Version history.
        3. In the list, select the correct recent version and click Restore.
    3. If many files were overwritten or corrupted
      • Use OneDrive’s Restore your OneDrive feature (for Microsoft 365 subscribers):
        1. Go to the OneDrive website.
        2. At the top, select Settings > Options, then Restore your OneDrive.
        3. Choose a date/time from before the overwrite happened.
        4. Use the activity chart/feed to confirm, then complete the restore.
      • Note: Files or folders created after the restore point will be moved to the OneDrive recycle bin and can be restored from there if needed.
    4. If the version is not in Version History or after a OneDrive restore
      • Check if there is a working local copy on the Mac (for example, if it was never fully synced or if Time Machine or other backup was used). If not present in OneDrive Version History, OneDrive restore, recycle bin, or local backup, it cannot be recovered.
