Continual problems with my Surface Pro 11

After having had great success with an earlier surface Pro, I purchased a new surface Pro 11 in late 2024. It has proven to be the most troublesome and frustrating computer i have ever owned. I have to cold reboot it daily, because if it is left on for a while it will lock up and the camera will stop working. It crashes for no apparent reason, and I have carefully avoided installing any apps not listed as compatible with ARM. It will hang in the middle of simple things like loading an office app. Unfortunately that has limited my use of some major apps I had hoped to use. Even trying to migrate data to it in the first place using PC Mover was a disaster, because the ARM version of PC Mover migrates some system files that only work on Intel, and that causes it to crash.. I see other threads on here and on the web complaining of identical issues, but most are locked by Microsoft and can no longer accept comments. I don't see any answers that help to solve the issues. Was this model just a disaster, and MS has washed its hands of it? Sadly I went for the fully loaded top of the line version, so I have a considerable investment, but I am having to use an older surface book for many things because this machine is so frustrating. At the very least, I would welcome a suggestion on how to fix the problem of the Camera stopping working after a few hours. This happens every day.

For recurring freezes, crashes, and camera failures on Surface Pro (including Surface Pro 11), the documented path is to systematically rule out software, storage, and hardware issues, then use reset/service options if the behavior persists.

    1. Force shutdown when frozen If the device locks up or becomes unresponsive:
    • Press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds, until the Surface shuts down and restarts and the Windows logo appears, then release the power button. This is the supported way to recover when Windows is frozen.
    1. If Windows stops responding more than once When freezes and crashes are frequent and not clearly tied to a specific app, use these steps:

    a. Get the latest firmware, drivers, and Windows updates

    • Open the Surface app (install it from Microsoft Store if needed).
    • In the Surface app, expand Help & support and check the update status.
    • If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install all available updates. This ensures the latest Surface firmware, drivers (including camera), and OS fixes are applied.

    b. Scan with Windows Security

    • Open Windows Security and run a full scan. This helps rule out malware or security issues that can cause instability.

    c. Disable unnecessary startup applications Background apps starting with Windows can cause hangs and performance issues.

    • Open Startup settings (or go to Settings → Apps → Startup).
    • Disable non-essential apps from starting automatically.

    d. Free up drive space Low or heavily fragmented storage can contribute to poor performance and instability.

    • Open Storage settings and use the built‑in tools to delete temporary files, empty Recycle Bin, and remove unneeded items.
    • If desired, also follow the guidance to defragment/optimize data drives.
    1. Check for hardware-related issues Run built‑in diagnostics to see if underlying hardware problems may be contributing:

    a. Windows Memory Diagnostic

    • In the taskbar search box, type memory and select Windows Memory Diagnostic.
    • Choose Restart now and check for problems (recommended).
    • After restart, Windows will test RAM and then restart again when complete.

    b. Error Checking on system drive

    • Open File Explorer → This PC.
    • Right‑click Windows (C:)PropertiesTools tab.
    • Under Error checking, select Check and follow the prompts.
    1. Restore or reset Surface If crashes, freezes, or camera failures continue after updates and diagnostics, use system recovery:
    • Follow the guidance in Restore or reset Surface for Windows to either:
      • Restore to a previous restore point (if available), or
      • Reset the device (keeping files or removing everything) to return Windows to a clean state. This is the supported way to eliminate corruption from migrated system files or incompatible software.
    1. If problems persist after reset If, after a full reset, Windows still freezes frequently and the camera stops working after a few hours, the next step is service:
    • Use the warranty/service workflow to:
      • Check warranty status,
      • Create a service order,
      • Prepare and ship the device to Microsoft if needed.
    • Alternatively, where available, use an in‑person service center for professional inspection, troubleshooting, and system recovery.
    • For technically experienced owners, Microsoft also provides self‑repair parts and guides for supported components.

If the Surface is owned by an organization, service should be arranged through the organization’s Surface service options for Business and Education.

These steps address repeated freezing, instability, and potential hardware issues; if a clean, fully updated system still shows the same daily camera and lockup behavior, service or repair is the documented resolution path.
