minecraft launcher error code 0x803f81f5

Every time I launch the minecraft launcher I get error code 0x803f81f5.

The code is for too many devices, but I only have 5 devices linked. But when I got to "Microsoft Store device management" it shows 0, I'm not sure if thats part of the issue (it's the devices page that shows 5).

I've gone through everything suggested online.

Unlog - relog - restart -uninstall - microsoft store, xbox account, running powershell commands etc.. Done a complete fresh install of windows. Made an offline account. And every time I get the error code 0x803f81f5

I'm using a Surface Pro 11 with a snapdraggon x plus which I'm starting to think is the issue and might just return it.

I've tried launching the minecraft launcher and also minecraft for windows and received the same message. I've launched them from the start menu, and the windows store. When I look at them at the xbox app it just says there was an error installing and gives me the same error code.

I'm able to install and play other xbox games from my microsoft account without receiving this error.

    Hi Mh,

    Thank you for reaching out.

The error code 0x803F81F5 typically relates to app licensing validation through Microsoft Store and Xbox services. In this case, the behavior you’re seeing is not caused by the number of devices linked to your account.

On some Windows 11 devices running on ARM‑based processors (such as Snapdragon), certain Store‑delivered apps may not complete licensing validation as expected, even though the device and account are otherwise functioning normally.

Please ensure Windows 11 and Microsoft Store apps remain fully up to date, as compatibility improvements continue to be released. At this point, you can try this available workaround:

Play Minecraft Java Edition using the standalone launcher

    • Download the Minecraft Java launcher directly from Minecraft.
    • Sign in with your Microsoft account.
    • Launch and play Java Edition (does not rely on Microsoft Store licensing).

I've done all of those things.

I thought this was the Microsoft support. Do you have a link to the correct Microsoft support for me?

Error 0x803f81f5 indicates a device/licensing problem when installing or launching a Microsoft Store/Xbox app such as Minecraft Launcher or Minecraft for Windows.

Based on the available information, the supported steps are:

    1. Check device limit and remove old devices
      • Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/devices.
      • Confirm there are no more than 10 devices associated with the Microsoft account.
      • If there are many old or unused devices, remove some:
        1. Select the device.
        2. Choose Show details or Manage.
        3. Under the device name, select More actions > Remove and follow the prompts.
      • Then try installing/launching Minecraft again from Microsoft Store or Xbox app.
    2. Confirm Windows version compatibility
      • Some apps and games only work on specific Windows versions or device types.
      • Make sure Windows 11 on the Surface Pro 11 is fully updated. For updating Windows, see Windows Update: FAQ.
      • If Minecraft for Windows or the Launcher has device/architecture limitations, the Store may block activation on unsupported hardware.
    3. Verify the game in Microsoft Store Library
      • On the Surface Pro 11, open Microsoft Store (search for “Microsoft Store” from the taskbar).
      • Go to Library and locate Minecraft Launcher and Minecraft for Windows.
      • If they appear as owned, try installing/launching from there.
    4. Check for device/app compatibility messages
      • When opening the Minecraft product page in Microsoft Store, look for any compatibility warning (for example, that the app only works on certain device types).
      • If a compatibility error is shown, only compatible versions of the app or game can be installed on that device.

If the device list is within limits, Windows is fully updated, and there is no compatibility warning in Microsoft Store, the remaining path is to contact Microsoft support/Xbox support so they can review the account’s device activations and Minecraft entitlement on the backend.
