Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
If I sign out of my Microsoft account, will that stop Windows 10 updates from installing?
The latest update this month put my PC into a reboot loop, and it took me hours to fix it. I really don’t want to go through that again.

Hi Oliver Taylor,
To answer your question directly: signing out of your Microsoft account will not stop Windows 10 updates from installing. Updates are managed at the operating system level, not tied to your account sign‑in.
If you want more control, you can use Group Policy (for Pro/Enterprise editions) or the Windows Update settings to pause or defer updates. Another option is to set your network connection to metered, which delays automatic downloads. For longer‑term stability, you may want to configure updates to install only after you’ve had a chance to test them on a non‑critical machine.
It’s also a good idea to check the Windows release health dashboard before applying updates, as Microsoft posts known issues and workarounds there. If a particular patch is causing problems, you can temporarily uninstall it and block it until a fixed version is released.
I hope the response provided some helpful insight. If it clarified the issue for you, please consider marking it as Accept Answer so others with the same issue can find the solution.

Signing out of a Microsoft account does not stop Windows 10 updates from downloading or installing.
Windows 10 is designed to automatically download and install updates to keep the device secure. Updates will eventually need to be installed regardless of account sign‑in status or update settings.
To reduce the risk of another problematic update rather than trying to block updates via account sign‑out, use the built‑in pause options:
Note: After the pause limit is reached, the latest updates must be installed before pausing again.
If the concern is reboots at inconvenient times, configure restarts instead of trying to block updates:
