I’ve been using a Windows 11 PC for about a year now. It was a pre-built system, so everything was already set up when I got it. Recently, I suddenly started seeing an error message with the code 0xC004F012, and it says that Windows is not activated. I’m not very familiar with computers, so I’m not sure what caused this or how to fix it.

Could someone please guide me on what I should do?

    Hi Lucia,

The error 0xC004F012 usually indicates that Windows is unable to access or validate its activation data, which can happen if some licensing files become corrupted or if there has been a recent system or hardware change. Since your PC came pre-built, it most likely uses a digital license that is tied to the motherboard, so this issue can sometimes appear unexpectedly even if you did not change anything yourself. A good first step is to restart your computer and make sure you are connected to the internet, then check the Activation section in Settings again to see if it resolves itself. You can also try signing in with your Microsoft account, as this helps Windows re-link the digital license to your device. If the problem persists, running a system file check using the sfc /scannow command in an elevated Command Prompt can help repair any corrupted system files that might be affecting activation. After the scan completes, restart your PC and check the activation status once more. In many cases, Windows will automatically reactivate once the underlying issue is fixed. If it still shows as not activated, you may need to re-enter your product key if you have one available. For pre-built systems, the key is often embedded in the firmware, so Windows should normally detect it automatically.

Error 0xC004F012 is listed among activation errors that can occur when Windows cannot complete or validate activation against Microsoft’s activation servers.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Confirm internet connectivity
      • Make sure the PC is connected to the internet and that no firewall or security software is blocking Windows activation.
    2. Run the Activation troubleshooter
      • On Windows 11:
        1. Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
        2. If available, select Troubleshoot and follow the on‑screen steps.
      • If you recently changed hardware (for example, motherboard replacement), the troubleshooter may guide through reactivation. For more details, see Using the Activation troubleshooter in the referenced article.
    3. Check for a valid product key
      • Error families that include 0xC004F012 can be caused by an invalid or unusable product key.
      • Locate the product key (25‑character code) from one of these:
        • Email confirmation from when Windows was purchased.
        • Documentation/packaging from the PC.
        • Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label on the device.
      • Then:
        1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
        2. Select Change product key.
        3. Enter the 25‑character product key and complete activation.
    4. If the key has already been used or is blocked
      • If activation fails with messages indicating the key has already been used on another device or can’t be used to activate Windows, a different product key is required. In that case, purchase a new Windows license from the Microsoft Store via Settings > System > Activation > Go to Microsoft Store (if shown), then follow the prompts.
    5. If activation servers are busy or temporarily unavailable
      • Some errors in the same group as 0xC004F012 can occur when activation servers are busy or temporarily unavailable. In that case, wait a while and try activation again from Settings > System > Activation.
    6. If none of the above works
      • If there is a valid product key and the troubleshooter does not resolve the issue, contact Microsoft customer support using the link in the referenced article for further assistance with activation.
