Urgent: Locked Out of Microsoft 365 Developer Tenant – Only Global Admin – MFA Device Lost

Hello Microsoft Moderators,

I am currently locked out of my Microsoft 365 Developer tenant and urgently need assistance.

I am the only Global Administrator for our organization. My account has MFA enforced, and the only registered authentication method was the Microsoft Authenticator app on my old phone.

Unfortunately, my phone was broken last month, and I no longer have access to the Authenticator app. Recently, I also had to reset my laptop after encountering issues following a system update, and now I cannot complete the MFA challenge during sign-in.

I still know the account email and password, and I also have access to the alternative email address and phone number associated with the account, but the system still requires approval from the Authenticator app, which I no longer have access to.

Because I am the only Global Administrator, there is no other admin available to reset my MFA or security information. This also prevents me from accessing the Microsoft 365 Admin Center or opening a support ticket through the portal.

Could a moderator please escalate this case to Microsoft Support (Data Protection / Tenant Recovery team) so they can verify ownership of the tenant and assist with resetting my MFA registration?

This issue is currently blocking administrative access to our organization’s Microsoft 365 services, so any assistance or escalation would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

    Hello @Suresh Shrestha,

Thank you for sharing your details via private message.

I’ve reached out to the engineering team regarding the MFA issue on your account. They have now unblocked it from the backend and cleared the bad reputation associated with it. You should be able to log in to the Azure Portal without any issues.

Please try signing in and verify if you can complete SMS authentication successfully. Let me know if you encounter any problems.

As a best practice, I recommend registering the Microsoft Authenticator method for your account instead of relying on SMS. SMS and voice call authentication methods are more vulnerable to IRSF attacks (telephony fraud) and are generally less secure.

For better practice, I recommend registering with Microsoft Authenticator method to your account instead of SMS method as these SMS/Voice telecom auth methods are susceptible to IRSF attacks telephony fraud.

I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

    Hi Suresh Shrestha

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum and apologize for the inconvenience

As you are currently the only Global Admin in your tenant and are unable to bypass the AI support flow, please try contacting Microsoft Support again by phone using the numbers listed here: Customer service phone numbers – Microsoft Support, and follow the recommended support script.

If calling does not work, you can create a trial tenant using the following link: Microsoft 365 Business Basic | Microsoft 365. After creating the trial tenant, you will be able to access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and raise a support ticket from there.

Assuming that you have already created an account after registering a free trial and you can go to Microsoft 365 admin center and click "Help & support" icon to raise your ticket. During this process, please make sure to turn off the Support Assistant.

When submitting the ticket, clearly state that you are raising it on behalf of an affected tenant to which you currently do not have access. The support team will assist in creating the ticket under the affected tenant, after which the Microsoft Data Protection team will handle the case.

Please note that this process may take longer than usual (7-14 working days), as the Data Protection team receives a high volume of requests. As a forum moderator, I do not have access to Microsoft internal systems and am unable to expedite this process.

Also, please be aware that the trial subscription is valid for 30 days. Before it expires, remember to cancel the trial in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to avoid any charges. You can follow this guide for instructions: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn.

I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to share any updates once the issue is resolved.
