Ghost draft won't go away

Yesterday I was using a chat as clipboard buffer. I cut the content from the chat and it marked it as a draft. That mark did not go away. Even after closing and restarting teams.

Teams knows I don't have any drafts, but the individual chat thinks I do, even though the chat text is entirely empty.

    Hi @Matt M,

Thank you for sharing the details of the issue. It appears that Microsoft Teams is continuing to display a draft indicator in one of the chats even though the compose box is empty and nothing shows in the Drafts view.

A few quick actions in the affected chat may help clear the indicator:

    • Place the cursor in the compose box and press Esc to discard any hidden draft state.
    • Select all text and delete it: click into the compose box > Ctrl+A (or Cmd+A on Mac) > Delete/Backspace. This removes any invisible characters that can trigger a draft badge.
    • Switch to another chat or channel, then return to refresh the UI.

If the indicator remains, the following steps are recommended:

1/ Sign out and sign back in

Choose the profile picture > Sign out, then sign back in and check the chat again.

    2/ Clear the Teams cache

    Windows – New Teams

    • Quit Teams completely.
    • Press Win+R and enter: %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams
    • Delete all files and folders in that location.
    • Restart Teams.

    macOS – New Teams

    • Quit Teams.
    • Open Terminal and run:

    rm -rf ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams

    rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2

    • Restart Teams.

For more detail: Clear the Teams client cache.

3/ Confirm that the latest build is installed

Select the three dots (···) next to your picture profile > Settings > About Teams, then update if needed.

4/ Test Teams on the web

Go to https://teams.cloud.microsoft/. If the draft badge does not appear in the web version but remains in the desktop app, the issue is likely related to local cache or UI state. Performing a repair or reset of the desktop app usually resolves this

    • Windows: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced options > Repair/Reset.

    If the issue still persists:

The next best action is to involve your IT administrator so they can review the problem in your environment. Another option is to open a support ticket through the Microsoft 365 admin center, where Microsoft Support can investigate the issue in more detail.

I hope this information helps. Please try the steps and let me know whether they resolve the issue. If the problem persists, we can work together to find a solution.
