I have received an invoice for using claude opus models in azure foundry. However I have been using them as part of the microsoft azure sponsorship free account. This is not clear why an invoice was raised.

    Hi,

Sponsorship credits cannot be applied to Claude Opus models since they are not directly sold and billed by Azure. They are sold through Azure Marketplace. Excerpt from article:

Microsoft for Startups sponsorship credits apply to Microsoft Foundry models that are sold and billed directly by Azure. Models billed by third‑party providers, partner services, or available through the Azure Marketplace are not eligible.

Please see article below for more details on which models are covered/not covered:

As an example, below is screenshot when deploying Claude Opus 4.6. The key thing to note is where it says it is offered through the Azure Marketplace.

    Hi,

This invoice was most likely generated because Claude models in Microsoft Foundry are not covered by Microsoft for Startups / Azure Sponsorship credits. Microsoft documents that sponsorship credits apply only to models sold and billed directly by Azure, while partner/community models are excluded, and Anthropic is explicitly listed among the providers that are not covered. (https://dori-uw-1.kuma-moon.com/en-us/microsoft-for-startups/build/foundry-model-sponsorship-coverage)

Microsoft also documents that Claude models require a paid Azure subscription with a billing account, and that sponsored accounts with Azure credits are currently restricted for this offer. (https://dori-uw-1.kuma-moon.com/en-us/azure/foundry/foundry-models/how-to/use-foundry-models-claude?tabs=python)

In addition, i see there are some strict rules for this Azure startup/sponsorship credits generally do not apply to third-party products or Azure Marketplace offerings, so an invoice can still be raised even if you still have sponsorship credits remaining. https://dori-uw-1.kuma-moon.com/en-us/azure/signups/overview

So i would recommend reviewing Cost Analysis by Resource and Meter, confirming which subscription was used for the deployment, and then opening a billing support request and on top of that a Microsoft for Startups support ticket just for your clarification.

    Hope this helps.
