  1. Log into the machine and delete the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download)
  2. Download KB5075999 manually from microsoft update catalog and save in ‘Downloads’ folder.
  3. Double click on the downloaded file and install.
  4. Immediately I had error 0x80070422. I googled this and it told me to start the Windows Update Service. Nothing was installed.
  5. Started Windows Update Service
  6. Double clicked on the previously downloaded file and this then started to install (it took around 1 hour).
  7. After the install it appeared to have installed correctly and was requesting a reboot.
  8. I lost RDC connection to it, but thereafter followed the progress through the web interface on vSphere
  9. It was a blue screen, which advised the usual ‘preparing for installation’, ‘Installing Updates; then it actually rebooted.
  10. Again, I watched the progress after the reboot, and had ‘installing updates’
  11. Right at the very end it advised ‘We couldn’t complete the updates, Undoing changes, Don’t turn off your computer’.
  12. Therefore, KB5075999 was not installedUser's image

    Hi Karthic R S,

The error code 0x80070422 and the “Undoing changes” message usually point to issues with the Windows Update service configuration or with the servicing stack itself. Since you’ve already tried manual installation and confirmed the service was restarted, the next step is to ensure the Servicing Stack Update (SSU) is fully up to date before applying the cumulative update. Without the latest SSU, cumulative updates often fail at the final stage.

Please verify that KB5075902 (the February 2026 SSU) is installed successfully, it should appear in your update history. If it is missing or corrupted, reinstall the SSU first, reboot, and then retry KB5075999. Also, clear the C:\\Windows\\SoftwareDistribution and C:\\Windows\\System32\\catroot2 folders after stopping the Windows Update service, then restart the service before attempting the update again.

If the update still fails, I recommend running the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command followed by sfc /scannow to repair any system file corruption that may be blocking the update. Once those checks complete, retry the installation. In some cases, applying the update via Windows Update rather than the standalone installer works better after these repairs.

I hope the response provided some helpful insight. If it clarified the issue for you, please consider marking it as Accept Answer so others with the same issue can find the solution.

    Jason.
