is it allowed to use SSRS 2022 with SQL Server 2025 Express?

Hi,

I need to confirm the legal and technical compatibility of using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) 2022 together with SQL Server 2025 Express Edition.

Based on Microsoft’s documentation, I understand that:

  • SQL Server 2025 no longer includes SSRS,
  • SSRS 2022 is the final version of SQL Server Reporting Services,
  • Reporting Services is discontinued for SQL Server Express editions starting with SQL Server 2025.

Could you please confirm whether it is legally permitted and technically supported to deploy SSRS 2022 while using SQL Server 2025 Express as the database engine?

    SSRS 2022 is the last version Microsoft released, and starting with SQL Server 2025, SSRS is no longer included. While SSRS 2022 can technically connect to SQL Server 2025 Express, this combination is not officially documented or supported by Microsoft, and Express edition does not provide reporting rights for production use. If you are currently on SQL Server 2022 with SSRS 2022, that setup is still fully supported and there is no urgent need to upgrade. For future upgrades, Microsoft recommends moving to Power BI Report Server with a licensed SQL Server edition.
