Hi william g,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.
From your screenshot, it looks like the export page fails immediately with âOops! An unexpected error occurred,â which is understandably frustrating when youâre just trying to download your data.
In most cases, this happens when the export site canât match your export request to the right signed-in session, especially if the browser is juggling multiple Microsoft accounts.
âAccount bleedâ (session mismatch)
Teams Free/personal export is very sensitive when youâre signed into more than one Microsoft account in the same browser (even in other tabs like Outlook.com, OneDrive, or Microsoft Store).
Please try these steps in order:
1) Sign out of ALL Microsoft accounts
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com and sign out.
- Also sign out of any Microsoft tabs you have open (Outlook.com, OneDrive, etc.).
- Close the browser completely (all windows), then reopen.
2) Use a clean session
- Open an InPrivate/Incognito window.
- Sign in to the export page using only the one personal Microsoft account that owns the chats.
- Try the export again.
3) Allow cookies / reduce tracking protection for the export site
- Temporarily allow cookies for teams.live.com (and disable strict tracking prevention for that site if enabled).
- Retry the export.
4) Clear site data just for teams.live.com
- Clear cookies + site storage for teams.live.com only (no need to wipe your whole browser).
Restart the browser and test again.
5) Disable extensions/VPN temporarily
Ad blockers, script blockers, privacy extensions, and some VPNs can prevent the export tool from completing.
Notes
- These steps apply to Teams Free / personal accounts. If this is a work/school (business) account, the export process is different.
- If you were trying to export community data and you were removed from that community, that portion may not be exportable.
Quick question to narrow it down
To help me pin this down: do you see the error immediately when you click âSubmit/Export,â or only later when you try to download the file?
Also, what browser are you using (Edge/Chrome/Safari)?
If you tell me whether it fails on Submit vs Download and which browser youâre on, Iâll point you to the best next step based on that behavior.Â
Please let me know if this proves useful to you, of if you would like further assistance.
I'm looking forward to your reply.
