How to fix my microphone

My computer is brand new (about 2 months old), and I have never been able to properly use the built-in microphone.

During calls and meetings, the internal microphone captures extremely low volume — people consistently report that my voice is almost inaudible.

I have already checked all sound settings, confirmed the correct input device, disabled audio enhancements, and updated the audio drivers. None of these steps improved the issue.

When I use an external headset or microphone, the audio works normally, which suggests the problem is isolated to the built-in microphone.

Is there any additional troubleshooting I can try, or does this indicate a hardware issue with the internal microphone?

Welcome Claudia Tonasso to the Q&A forum!

From what you described, I understand you're having an issue with the built-in microphone on your Surface. During calls and meetings, the internal microphone captures audio at an extremely low volume, making it almost inaudible to others.

Since you’ve already tried the essential steps without success, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Make sure that "Allow apps and Windows to use this device for audio" is allowed.

Sound settings > Input > Device properties > Turn “Allow apps and Windows to use this device for audio” on.

    1. Adjust Microphone input levels

Adjust the Input volume sliders until your mic is recording at the levels you want. The levels you'll use will vary depending on the amount of background noise and on whether you're using the mic that’s built into your Surface or an external mic.

    1. Get the latest updates
    • Download the Surface app from the Microsoft Store
    • In the Surface app, expand Help & support to check the update status.
    • If there are updates available, select the Check for updates button to open Windows Update and install the available updates.
    1. If nothing helps, back up your data and perform a Surface Reset or Recovery as a last resort.

If the issue still persists after reset, it may indicate a hardware problem. In that case, follow Microsoft’s official instructions on How to get service or repair for Surface to request a warranty repair for your Surface.

Hope this helps. I'm here if you need further assistance!
