Hello, I’m having an issue with Windows activation on my PC.

I’ve been using this computer for over 3 years and Windows was activated and working normally the entire time. Recently, it suddenly changed to “Not activated” and now shows error code 0xC004F074, saying it can’t connect to an organization’s activation server.

This is a personal PC, not owned by a school or workplace, and I haven’t changed hardware recently. I’m connected to the internet, but troubleshooting doesn’t fix the issue.

Could you please help me restore my Windows activation or explain why this suddenly happened?

Thank you.

The error code 0xC004F074 indicates that the Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated because no Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. This issue can occur for several reasons, even on a personal PC that has been activated previously.

Here are some potential causes and solutions:

    1. Network Issues: Ensure that your internet connection is stable. Sometimes, network issues can prevent your PC from reaching the activation server.
    2. Service Issues: The KMS server might be down or unreachable. Since you mentioned this is a personal PC, it’s possible that your system is mistakenly trying to connect to a KMS server instead of using a retail product key.
    3. Product Key Issues: If your Windows was activated using a KMS key, it might require periodic reactivation. If the KMS server is not available, you will see this error. You can try to switch to a retail key if applicable.
    4. Reactivation: You can try to reactivate Windows by opening an elevated command prompt (run as administrator) and typing the command slmgr.vbs /ato. This will attempt to activate Windows again with the current product key.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

That error usually indicates there is a problem with the Windows licence and how it was activated.

    1

Where did you get your Windows licence was that pre-installed on the PC or did you purchase a full retail Windows licence from Microsoft or from a 3rd party retailer?

    2

Click your Start Button, type cmd then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run or paste this command and hit Enter:

    slmgr.vbs /dlv

Please post a screenshot of the resulting dialog

    3

Download the free ShowKeyPlus app from the Microsoft Store.

Please provide a screenshot of that app window and please hide your product key in the screenshot.
