Hello there,

I am running Windows 11 Home and have bought an activation key for the Pro version as I need access to the remote desktop.

However, when trying to use the generic key to activate it (VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T), it refuses to work. I have unplugged all network connections, and the issue persists.

The issue you are experiencing with the generic key not working for activating Windows 11 Pro could be due to a few reasons:

    1. Edition Mismatch: The generic key you are trying to use is specifically for activating Windows 11 Pro. If your current installation is Windows 11 Home, you will need to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro first before using the Pro activation key. The generic key will not work if the installed edition does not match the edition you are trying to activate.
    2. Activation Process: Ensure that you are following the correct activation process. You may need to enter the generic key through the Settings app under "Update & Security" > "Activation" or use the command prompt with elevated privileges to run the activation command.
    3. Network Connection: While you mentioned that you have unplugged all network connections, ensure that your system can still access the Microsoft Activation servers when you attempt to activate. Sometimes, network issues can prevent successful activation.
    4. Generic Key Limitations: Generic keys are often used for installation and testing purposes and may not work for permanent activation. You might need a valid retail or volume license key for a successful activation.

If you continue to face issues, consider contacting Microsoft Support for further assistance with your activation problem.

    Welcome to the Q&A forum.

To upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro using your purchased Pro activation key, avoid entering the generic key (VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T) directly in standard Settings, as it might encounter network issues or edition mismatches. You're on the right track when going offline when entering the generic key to switch editions. Here are a few more things you could try:

    Try this instead:

    1. Right-click Start > Terminal (Admin).

Run slmgr /ipk VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T to upgrade to Pro.

    Restart PC.

Tip: Make sure you use the correct generic key for your Windows edition:

    Windows 11 Pro: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

    Windows 11 Pro N: 2B87N-8KFHP-DKV6R-Y2C8J-PKCKT

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations: DXG7C-N36C4-C4HTG-X4T3X-2YV77

    Windows 11 Pro N for Workstations: WYPNQ-8C467-V2W6J-TX4WX-WT2RQ

    1. After reboot, go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key, and enter your purchased Pro key to activate (internet required for final validation).

or run slmgr /ipk [your Pro key] then slmgr /ato (as administrator) to activate.

    Restart your PC when prompted.

If the generic key still doesn't work, please let me know:

    • Is there any specific error message do you see when attempting to activate with the generic key?
