Remote Desktop Access Failure

After purchasing a new PC I am in process of migrating the old one. Both have Windows 11. The current one supports Remote Desktop from my Android phone without issue. After purchasing the upgrade to Windows 11 Pro, the new one will not connect no matter what I try. I use the same 365 user name for both PCs. When attempting to connect to the new one, I receive the error message "The user name or password did not work." I have attempted to type in my 365 password to no avail. Is there a step I'm missing here?

When you encounter the error message "The user name or password did not work" while trying to connect to your new Windows 11 Pro PC via Remote Desktop, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Verify Credentials: Ensure that you are entering the correct username and password. Since you mentioned using the same 365 username, double-check that you are using the correct password associated with that account.
    2. Check Remote Desktop Settings: Make sure that Remote Desktop is enabled on the new PC. You can check this by going to Settings > System > Remote Desktop and ensuring that the option for allowing remote connections is turned on.
    3. Network and Firewall Settings: Ensure that the network connection is stable and that the firewall settings on the new PC allow Remote Desktop connections. You may need to allow Remote Desktop through the Windows Firewall settings.
    4. User Permissions: Confirm that your user account has permission to connect remotely. You can do this by checking the Remote Desktop Users group on the new PC. If your account is not listed, you may need to add it.
    5. Account Type: If your new PC is part of a domain or a workgroup, ensure that you are using the correct format for the username (e.g., DOMAIN\username or ******@domain.com).
    6. Password Changes: If you recently changed your Microsoft 365 password, make sure to update it in the Remote Desktop client settings.

If you have checked all these aspects and are still facing issues, consider reaching out to your system administrator or consulting the Microsoft Community for further assistance.

    Hi Dan,

That error almost always means the new PC is not getting the exact sign-in name and a real password it expects. Remote Desktop cannot use a PIN or Windows Hello, it must accept a standard password and the username must be in the correct format.

Do this on the new PC first.

Sign in locally. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign‑in options. Under Password, make sure a password exists. If not, create one, then lock the PC and sign back in once with that password so Windows registers it for network sign‑in. Still on the new PC, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and confirm Remote Desktop is On. Select Remote Desktop users and add your account email there so it is explicitly allowed.

Now fix the username format in the Android RD Client.

Edit the saved entry for the new PC. If you sign in to that PC with a personal Microsoft account, set the Username to MicrosoftAccount\******@domain.com and use the same password you confirmed above. If you sign in with your work or school Microsoft 365 account on an Azure AD joined device, set the Username to AzureAD\******@domain.com. Save and try again. Do not use only the alias or display name, and do not try a PIN.

If it still fails, tell me whether the new PC shows Connected to <your org> Azure AD under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, and the exact username you type in the RD app. I will adjust the next step based on that.
