I can't open any attached files in Outlook on my Samsung S23+ Android phone. I have cleared the cache with no luck. I don't want to uninstall the program because I don't have the settings for the incoming and outgoing mail servers. Might this be be a phone issue or an app issue? Thanks

If you are unable to open attached files in Outlook on your Samsung Galaxy S23+, it could be related to the app itself or the phone's settings. Here are a few things to consider:

    1. App Issue: Sometimes, the Outlook app may not function properly due to bugs or temporary glitches. Ensure that you have the latest version of the app installed. You can check for updates in the Google Play Store.
    2. Background Synchronization: If background synchronization is disabled, it may affect the app's ability to download and open attachments. Make sure that background synchronization is enabled in your device settings.
    3. File Format Compatibility: Ensure that the file types you are trying to open are supported by the Outlook app and that you have the necessary apps installed on your device to open those file types.
    4. Storage Space: Check if your device has sufficient storage space available. If the device is low on space, it may prevent attachments from being downloaded or opened.
    5. Temporary Files: Sometimes, clearing the cache may not be enough. You might want to try clearing the app data as well, but be aware that this will reset the app settings.

If the issue persists, you may need to consider reinstalling the app. However, if you are concerned about losing your account settings, you can note them down before proceeding with the uninstallation.

Thanks for sharing the details, Kurt! Try to disable Outlook’s “Open attachments with link” (OneDrive handoff bug)

Outlook on Android often fails to open attachments because it tries to hand them off to OneDrive or a system viewer that never launches.

    Fix

    • Open Outlook
    • Tap your profile icon → Settings
    • Go to Attachments
    • Turn OFF:
Open attachments with link Save attachments to cloud (if present)
    • Force close Outlook and reopen it

This alone fixes attachment opening for many Galaxy S22/S23 users. If the problem will persist, reset Outlook’s internal attachment handler (no uninstall)

    Fix

    • Go to Settings → Apps → Outlook
    • Tap Storage
    • Tap Clear cache (you already did this)
    • Then tap Manage storage (or Storage used)
    • Tap Clear attachments / Clear downloaded files (if shown)
    • Restart the phone

This does not remove your account or server settings.

See if these help. If you need further assistance just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly
