Hi,

My son cannot log into his Microsoft account because it keeps requesting parental consent.

  • His account is: ******@outlook.com
  • My account is: ******@raynermail.com

When he tries to log in, the system wants parental consent. When I login and provide consent, the system continues to ask for parental consent. It just loops around and never gets past the parental consent stage.

We have tried:

  • Different PCs, and mobiles
  • Different browsers (edge, firefox), guest/private/incognito modes
  • Rebooting
  • Same experience logging into OneDrive app, account.microsoft.com, outlook.com and minecraft
  • Allowing him all permissions in the Microsoft Family Safety app (set to no age restrictions)
  • Changing his Microsoft password
  • I removed him and re-invited him to the family account, but he cannot accept the re-invite because he cannot log in.

Nothing has helped. There is something wrong his account. The system thinks he is under 13, but he is 17 years old and he has account his account for 6 or more years. The parental request dialog said he was under 13 and wanted consent to "setup" his account.

To be clear, he is able to log into his PC normally. It's just accessing microsoft apps and services that is the problem.

Thanks.

    Hi Ivan Rayner,

Good day. I'm Jhun an independent advisor. In regards with your son's account parental consent looping issue, the problem may usually on the server side on his Microsoft account. Microsoft believes your son's account is still under 13 and not fully setup even you already corrected some of the details and setup to avoid the consent.

    A. Try to remove him from family without re-inviting.

    1. After removing him from the family group, wait for 24 hours (to make sure Microsoft's backend to sync).
    2. After 24 hours, have your son try to sign-in at:
      https://account.microsoft.com.
    3. If it works, his account is now treated as a normal Microsoft account. You can re-add the account to Family safety again as an option.

    B. Verify date of birth even if it looks correct. If DOB was entered incorrectly years ago, Microsoft my still reference the original value internally, even if you changed it later.

    1. Sign in and check to: https://account.microsoft.com/family.
    2. Click your son's profile > Info.
    3. Confirm if date of birth shows 17+ and no banner saying "child account setup required".

    C. Convert his account to an adult account. If the account is already 17+, Microsoft allows:

    1. The parent to remove him from the family (see procedure A).
    2. Son signs in to: https://account.microsoft.com/profile.
    3. Add a new email alias (any email you control)
    4. Make the new alias the primary
    5. Remove the old alias (optional, after login works). This often forces Microsoft to re-evaluate the account type and clears the child flag.

    D. If still nothing works, try contacting Microsoft support for them to reset the account.

    1. Go to https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing.
    2. Choose Microsoft account.
    3. Then select Manage family safety
    4. Choose Child account can’t sign in (or similar wording)
    5. When prompted, select Contact Support → Chat or Request a call.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Jhun
