Due to problems with my mobile, I had to go to factory setting and lost contact to my Microsoft account, I had to start afresh and made a new account, this was a mistake. I still had access to my original Microsoft account on my tablet and laptop. So, in effect I had two Microsoft accounts and didn't realise I was paying for two. Now I want to remove the second account but can't because it has become the primary alias for both accounts. I have stopped the recurring payment for the second account that was created and which I want to remove, how do I progress in this action. I have limited time because the renewal for the second account is due 16th December. I don't want to lose all my files and pictures which I have access in both accounts. I want to use the original account only. Please help me

    Hi Bob Anne Taylor,

Good day. I'm Jhun an independent advisor. In regards with your second new Microsoft account that you want to delete (became primary) and retain the original Microsoft account, these 2 accounts cannot actually merge, so your data is not combined. Your files are still stored separately in each OneDrive. Below is the safe and correct way to fix this.

    A. Identify which account you want to keep. Log in on a browser on https://account.microsoft.com with your Original account (the one you want to retain.)

Check: Subscriptions, if it has Microsoft 365 or OneDrive plan.
Your Info, if it shows the email you want as primary.
OneDrive, if it contain all your files/photos.

    B. Check your second new account (the one you want to delete). Log into this account.

Check: Subscriptions, make sure renewal is already cancelled.
OneDrive, check if you have files in here that you want to retain, download them.

    C. Fix the Primary alias problem. You can only delete a Microsoft account if it has another alias that can become primary, or you turn off the alias and then close the account.

    To Fix alias problems:

    1. Log in to the account you want to keep (Original old account). Go to https://account.microsoft.com> Your info > Manage how you sign-in
    2. You should see something like:
      Primary alias: Wrong email
      Other Aliases: Correct email
    3. Change the primary alias, click "Make Primary" next to the email you want to keep. If you cant make it primary because "this alias is already primary on another account", then: the new account (you want to delet) must first remove that alias from its alias list.
    4. On the second account (the new account you want to delete), go to the same page > remove the alias that belongs to your main account.
    5. After removing, return to the main account (you want to retain), then set the correct address as primary.

    D. Close the Second account after fixing the alias. Once the primary alias issue is solved and you saved any files, go to https://account.microsoft.com/closeaccount while still logged into the second new account (account want to delete).

    E. Some important rules after deleting the account.

    1. Microsoft gives 60 days before permanently deleting.
    2. You can still recover it during this period.
    3. Nothing from the main account will be affected.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Jhun
