Deployment of Static Web App fails with “policy violation” on Azure for Students

Hello,

I am trying to create an Azure Static Web App from my GitHub repository containing a plain HTML/CSS/JS website (index.html, style.css, script.js) using my Azure for Students subscription.

During deployment, I receive the following error:

"Template deployment failed because of policy violation."

I suspect this is due to a restriction on allowed regions for my student subscription.

Could you please advise:

  1. How I can check which regions are allowed for my Azure for Students subscription?
  2. What is the best way to deploy a simple static website without hitting this policy restriction?

Thank you for your help!

To check which regions are allowed for your Azure for Students subscription, you can refer to the Azure documentation or your Azure portal. Generally, Azure for Students subscriptions may have limitations on the regions where you can deploy resources. You can view the available regions by navigating to the Azure portal, selecting Create a Resource, and then checking the region options for the service you are trying to deploy.

For deploying a simple static website without hitting policy restrictions, consider the following approaches:

    1. Use Allowed Regions: Ensure that you are deploying your Static Web App in one of the regions that are permitted for your Azure for Students subscription.
    2. Check Policy Compliance: Review the policy definitions associated with your subscription to ensure that your deployment complies with them. You may need to adjust your deployment settings accordingly.
    3. Alternative Services: If the Static Web App service is not available in your allowed regions, consider using other Azure services that support static hosting, such as Azure Blob Storage with static website hosting enabled.

These steps should help you navigate the policy restrictions and successfully deploy your static website.

    Hi Belay,

You might need to instead use App Service to host your static site. The reason is, there are only small number of Static Web App regions, and these regions may not be in your approved list. Please see below.

Azure for Students restricts which regions you can deploy resources to. Typically you are restricted to five different regions, and these vary for each person.

Please navigate to Azure Policy -- Authoring -- Assignments using link below:

    https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_Azure_Policy/PolicyMenuBlade/~/Assignments

Click on assignment named Allowed resource deployment regions

Examine Allowed locations Parameter value for list of regions, similar to below (regions in screenshot are different than yours):

    User's image

The regions shown in your Parameter value are the ones you are allowed to deploy resources to. Please try to create resources in one of these regions and let me know the results.

    Thanks.
