I just wasted a whole lot of time trying to learn how to do a table of contents or table of authorities. Too much trouble and frankly it seems nobody really knows how to use these features well.

So, all I want is to be able to create my own manual table of contents or authorities but have the right side page numbers align on the right side of the page with the ... also in front of the page number. That's all I want. Please help, it shouldn't be that hard.

To manually align page numbers for a table of contents or authorities in Microsoft Word, you can follow these steps:

    1. Create Your Table of Contents or Authorities: Start by typing out your entries for the table of contents or authorities manually.
    2. Insert Tab Stops:
      • Highlight the text where you want to align the page numbers.
      • Go to the Home tab on the Ribbon.
      • Click on the small arrow in the bottom right corner of the Paragraph group to open the Paragraph dialog box.
      • Click on Tabs at the bottom of the dialog box.
      • In the Tab stop position box, enter the position where you want the page numbers to align (e.g., 6.5 inches for right alignment on an 8.5-inch page).
      • Select Right under Alignment.
      • Click Set, then OK.
    3. Add Leaders: If you want dots or dashes leading to the page numbers:
      • In the same Tabs dialog, under Leader, select the option you prefer (e.g., 2 for dots).
      • Click OK.
    4. Type Page Numbers: After setting the tab stop, you can type the page numbers at the end of each entry, and they should align to the right with the leaders leading up to them.

This method allows you to manually create a table of contents or authorities with aligned page numbers as you desire.

    Dear @None Of Your Business

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on my understanding, are you wanting to manually type a table of contents, where:

    • the page numbers are aligned to the right margin.
    • there are dot leaders (...) stretching from the entry title to the page number.
    • and all page numbers line up neatly and consistently?

Did I understand that correctly? If I misunderstood anything, I would truly appreciate it if you could share a bit more detail, so I can understand your needs better and support you more accurately.

If this is indeed what you want to do, here is how to set it up (like Q&A Assist mentioned above):

Type your table‑of‑contents entries normally (as shown in the example below). No need to worry about spacing yet.

Select all table of content lines. Go to Home > Paragraph (small arrow). In the bottom-left corner, choose Tabs. In Tab stop position, enter the right‑margin value (usually around 15 cm or 6.5", depending on your page size). Under Alignment, choose Right. Under Leader, choose 2 (the dotted line). Click Set > OK.

After the right-aligned tab is set, I will place the cursor in Section A, press Tab > Word will automatically create the dot leaders to the right margin > then I type the page number.

I’m not fully sure if I understood your exact intent. If I’m mistaken, please help clarify, or feel free to send me an example of what you want your table of contents to look like and a picture of your current TOC layout. This will help me understand more accurately and assist you better.

    Looking forward to your response!
