Hello,

After the last windows update 2 days ago, my computer no longer outputs audio to my speakers… it thinks the audio is working, but I hear nothing.

my Bluetooth headset works fine, and my speakers are connected properly.

i have tried rolling back the update, reinstalling Realtek drivers, using the useless “audio troubleshooting “ to no avail… I have seen a few posts from other people on other forums such as Reddit with the same problem - and no solutions can be had…

My speakers connect via the Spdif connection, but I have tried using regular audio input cables as well with no success… help please?

using a Threadripper 7980x on a ASUS Sage wifi motherboard, latest firmware, drivers, windows 11 64 updates installed…

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with audio output via the S/PDIF connection after a recent Windows update. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check Audio Services: Ensure that the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services are running. You can do this by typing services.msc in the Run dialog (Win + R) and checking the status of these services.
    2. Device Manager: Open Device Manager and check if there are any issues with the audio devices. Right-click on your audio device and select "Properties" to see if there are any errors reported.
    3. Uninstall and Reinstall Drivers: Since you've already tried reinstalling the Realtek drivers, ensure that you completely uninstall the audio device from Device Manager, then restart your computer. Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.
    4. Try Different Ports: If possible, try connecting your speakers to a different S/PDIF port or use a different type of audio connection (like HDMI or a standard audio jack) to see if the issue persists.
    5. Windows Update Rollback: If the issue started after a specific update, consider rolling back that update again, as it may have introduced compatibility issues with your audio hardware.
    6. Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your motherboard's firmware is up to date, as sometimes audio issues can be resolved with the latest BIOS updates.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to check with ASUS support or forums for any specific fixes related to your motherboard model and the recent Windows update.

Thanks for sharing the details! Try to force-enable S/PDIF Format Support (Windows Update disables supported formats)

Many users report that the update un-checked all valid output formats for S/PDIF, causing silent output even when the device “works.”

    How to fix

Right-click speaker icon → Sound settings

    Scroll → More sound settings

Under Playback, select your S/PDIF / Optical Output → Properties

    Go to Supported Formats

    Re-enable these manually:

    • ✔ Dolby Digital
    • ✔ DTS
    • ✔ 44.1 kHz
    • ✔ 48 kHz
    • (If available) ✔ 96 kHz

    Apply → Test

After the latest cumulative update, these formats often appear unchecked even if they were enabled before.

See if this helps. If you need further assistance just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly
