    Dear Isaac Duker

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

The issue described, where inking fails when the palm touches the screen, strongly suggests a problem with how the device is handling touch input and pen input simultaneously. This feature is known as palm rejection. Outdated or corrupted Surface Pen firmware + N-trig/Wacom driver conflict after Windows updates.

To help me narrow down the cause and provide the most relevant solution, could you please provide a few more details:

    • Which version of Windows are you currently running? (e.g., Windows 10 or Windows 11, and which specific build, if known)
    • When did this problem first start? (e.g., after a recent Windows Update, or has it always been like this?)
    • Are you using the original Surface Pen that came with the Surface Pro 7, or a different generation/third-party pen?
    • Have you noticed if this happens only in a specific application (like OneNote or Whiteboard) or in all inking applications?

In the meantime, please consider trying my suggestions and let me know any new information (if possible, specify the steps you have or are taking that have not resolved your issue) so I can follow up on your case

    • Go to [Settings] > [Update & Security] (Windows 10) or [Windows Update] (Windows 11) > click [Check for updates] > Install any pending updates, as these often include critical firmware and driver updates for your Surface device.
    • Open [Device Manager] (Search for it in the Start Menu) > Expand the [Human Interface Devices] section > Right-click on HID-compliant pen (and/or HID-compliant touch screen) > select [Uninstall device] > Restart your Surface Pro 7.

Important: Do not check the box that says "Attempt to remove the driver software for this device."  at this step before proceeding to the next steps.

Manually download latest drivers for Suface Pro 7 via this article: Download drivers and firmware for Surface - Microsoft Support

[Settings] > [Bluetooth & devices] > remove “Surface Pen” > press & hold top button 7 seconds until LED flashes > Click [Repair].

Disclaimer:  If you are using a third-party pen, ensure its manufacturer's drivers or software are also up to date, as they may manage their own palm rejection settings.

Please keep me updated with anything new that you are trying with each option.
