Will it be possible to add a dictionary type custom rule for applying classification based on the column names instead of data itself

Hi Team,

Currently the dictionary rule for custom classification is working on the data present in the data asset.

It would be helpful if we have a dictionary rule based on the column names as an additional option. Please examine and share your view if it can be developed at least for SQL views, parquet, json format assets

Expectation:

If the dictionary rule based on the column name (say Custom_rule _for_personal_name)contains values like created_by, then during the L3 scanning the data asset will be scanned and checks if the data asset contains created_by as a field name then that asset and the corresponding schema will be classified as Custom_rule _for_personal_name

Please let me know if it's possible to create that in the future

Currently, the Microsoft Purview Data Map supports custom classifications based on data patterns or specific column names, primarily through regular expressions or dictionary methods. However, the existing functionality for dictionary rules focuses on the data values rather than the column names themselves.

While there is no explicit mention in the provided context about the capability to create dictionary rules based solely on column names, it is suggested that configuring patterns for column names can help minimize false positives in classifications. This implies that there may be potential for future enhancements to support your request, but as of now, it is not a supported feature.

For your specific use case, it would be beneficial to provide feedback to the Microsoft Purview team regarding this feature request, as they may consider it for future updates.
