System file repair
- Navigate to Command Prompt (Run as Administrator) > type:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Reboot when complete.
Regaining administrator on a personal Windows PC
- Check your account type: Settings > Accounts > Your info. If it says Standard, you lost admin rights.
- Enable the built‑in Administrator (temporary):
- Hold Shift while clicking Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt > type:
net user administrator /active:yes net user administrator <StrongPasswordHere> - Restart, sign in as Administrator.
- Hold Shift while clicking Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt > type:
- Create a new admin user (recommended):
- Settings > Accounts > Family & other users > Add account > create a new local account > set Account type to Administrator.
- Disable the built‑in Administrator again (for safety):
net user administrator /active:no
