Downloading Security update KB5072033

I am trying to install the Security update KB5072033. But during the download, I keep getting messages that Smart App control has blocked this app 9424c1.msi because we can't confirm who published it and it's not an app we're familiar with.

This happened 4 times before I decided to abort the download.

Any help is always welcome.

    Hi Rockface,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Please note that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to hide your personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide any personal or organizational information the next time you post an error or other details to protect personal data.

Besides, I completely understand how frustrating it is when an update fails over and over, especially with Smart App Control getting in the way. Let’s work through this together and get your system updated.

    Here’s what I recommend:

    Step 1: Repair system files

    • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
    • Run these commands one at a time:
        DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
        sfc /scannow

These tools check and repair any corruption in Windows components that might be causing the issue.

Step 2: Perform a clean boot

    • Press Win + R, type "msconfig", and hit Enter.
    • In the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
    • Go to the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager, and disable all startup items.
    • Restart your PC. This ensures no third-party apps interfere during installation.

*Disclaimer: A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background service is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.

These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get back on track.

Step 3: Download and install the update manually

    • Go to Microsoft Update Catalog.
    • Search for KB5072033 and download the .msu file that matches your Windows version.
    • Double-click the file to install, then restart your PC

Please try these steps and let me know if the issue persists. I’ll be happy to assist further.

It seems that Smart App Control is blocking the installation of the Security update KB5072033 because it cannot confirm the publisher of the file (9424c1.msi). Smart App Control is designed to block apps and binaries that are not recognized as safe, which includes files that are unsigned or from unknown sources.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Windows is fully updated. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.
    2. Disable Smart App Control Temporarily: If you are confident that the update is safe, you can temporarily disable Smart App Control. Go to Settings > Windows Security > App and Browser Control, and turn off Smart App Control. Remember to turn it back on after the installation.
    3. Use an Administrator Account: Make sure you are using an administrator account to install the update, as this can sometimes bypass restrictions.
    4. Check Event Logs: You can check the Code Integrity Event Logs for more details on why the file was blocked. Open Event Viewer and navigate to Application and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational.

If the problem persists, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.

    Hello

    Success

    DISM ran without issue

SFC replaced corrupted/missing files... (i only ran this once)

Managed to figure out which one by the KB number. The install went ok and no problems to date.

    Thx as Always
