Getting a bunch of these from Outlook server in Thunderbird

Been getting a bunch of this, usually in my TB TRASH folder, I think from the Outlook online server.

The server couldn't retrieve the following message:

Subject: "<Removed for PII>"

From: "Not available" ("Not available")

Sent date: 10/31/2024 2:25:02 PM

The message hasn't been deleted. You might be able to view it using either Outlook or Outlook Web App. You can also contact the sender to find out what the message says.

What does this mean? Outlook or Thunderbird? What do I need to do?

The issue you're experiencing with Thunderbird receiving messages from the Outlook server that appear as "Not available" typically indicates that the email client (Thunderbird) is unable to retrieve the message content from the server. This can happen for several reasons, such as:

    1. Server Issues: There may be a temporary issue with the Outlook server that is preventing Thunderbird from accessing the message content.
    2. Email Format: The message might be in a format that Thunderbird cannot interpret correctly, leading to it being displayed as "Not available."
    3. Connection Problems: There could be connectivity issues between Thunderbird and the Outlook server, which might cause incomplete message retrieval.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

    • Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable.
    • Refresh Thunderbird: Try refreshing your inbox in Thunderbird to see if the message can be retrieved again.
    • Access via Outlook: As suggested in the message, you can log into your Outlook account directly (either via the Outlook application or Outlook Web App) to see if the message is accessible there.
    • Contact the Sender: If the message is important, consider reaching out to the sender for more information about the email.

If the problem persists, you may want to check Thunderbird's settings or consult their support resources for further troubleshooting steps.

    Hi @Dalewebb,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A, and thank you so much for reaching out to us.

Please note that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to hide your personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide any personal or organizational information the next time you post an error or other details to protect personal data.

Please note that as a Microsoft Q&A moderator, my access to external applications is limited, so I can only be able to assist based on publicly available documentation and resources. That said, I’ll do my best to help you as much as possible.

To better understand what you’re seeing, could you share a screenshot of the exact error message through private message? Additionally, may I know if your account a personal account or business account?

If your account is a business account, I recommend asking your administrator or IT team to review the message details in the Exchange Admin Center through Message Trace. They can check the original message metadata, including the sender and delivery status, which can provide more insight into why this behavior is occurring.

    Looking forward to your response.
