Teams on iPad using external camera

Hi, I have a (probably uncommon....) problem: I am trying to use an iPad as a meeting room device. I am using an external camera, and it all works OK - apart from the fact that the camera feed from the external camera always comes up in portrait mode as if it were a mobile phone. Is there any way to change the aspect ratio?!?

    Dear Enzo,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

Thank you for sharing your question. I’ve researched this issue thoroughly, including Microsoft documentation and community discussions, to provide you with the most accurate information.

Currently, Microsoft Teams on iPad does support external cameras (introduced with iPadOS 17 and recent Teams updates), but there is no built-in option to rotate or change the aspect ratio of the external camera feed. When an external camera is connected, Teams automatically uses it, and the video often defaults to portrait orientation, especially when the app is displayed on an extended external screen. This behavior is linked to how iPadOS handles orientation for apps using external displays and UVC cameras.

You can refer to this article: Introducing External Camera Support for iPads in Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Community Hub

In community discussions about iPad camera display issues, here are some suggestions that may help:

    1. Use screen mirroring instead of extended display

When iPad is set to “extended display,” many apps including Teams, default to portrait mode. Switching to mirroring often restores the correct landscape orientation.

    1. Keep Teams running on the iPad screen

If you move the Teams app to an external monitor in extended mode, orientation issues are more likely. Keeping the app on the iPad display usually maintains proper landscape orientation.

    Position the iPad correctly

Place the iPad in standard landscape orientation with the camera at the top and the USB-C port on the right. This setup helps iPadOS interpret orientation correctly.

    1. Update iPadOS and Teams

Ensure you’re running the latest versions of iPadOS and Teams. External camera support is new, and improvements to orientation handling are being rolled out gradually.

    1. Check if your external camera offers rotation settings

Some UVC cameras allow you to adjust orientation or aspect ratio through their own firmware or companion apps. While this isn’t a Teams feature, it can help as a workaround.

Additionally, I completely agree with you, having an option to control camera orientation or aspect ratio in Teams would be extremely useful, especially for meeting room setups. Microsoft is continuously improving Teams features based on user feedback, and many suggestions have already been implemented after community input.

I strongly recommend submitting feedback directly through Teams feedback or via the Microsoft Feedback Portal. The more votes and visibility a feature request get, the higher the chance it will be prioritized. If you create a feedback post, feel free to share the link here so others can support it, I’ll add my vote too.
