How does one add an old Frontier (Yahoo) email account to either New or Classic Outlook?

Both Outlook Classic and New Outlook give the error message: "We couldn't log on to the incoming (IMAP) server. " This is the case for both of my Frontier email addresses. I'm missing something in the setup for these accounts.

Until today, I did not have a problem accessing either account through Outlook New or Classic.

To add an old Frontier (Yahoo) email account to either New or Classic Outlook, you should ensure that you are using the correct settings for IMAP. Here are the general steps to follow:

    1. Check IMAP Settings: Make sure you are using the correct incoming (IMAP) server settings for Frontier email:
      • IMAP Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
      • Port: 993
      • SSL: Yes
    2. Add Account in Outlook:
      • For Classic Outlook:
        • Open Control Panel and select Mail.
        • Click on Show Profiles and then Add to create a new profile.
        • Follow the prompts to enter your Frontier email account information.
      • For New Outlook:
        • Click on File > Add Account and enter your Frontier email address.
        • Select Advanced Options and check the box for Let me set up my account manually.
        • Choose IMAP and enter the server settings mentioned above.
    3. Authentication: Ensure that you are entering the correct password for your Frontier email account. If you have two-step verification enabled, you may need to generate an app password.
    4. Troubleshooting: If you encounter the error "We couldn't log on to the incoming (IMAP) server," double-check your server settings, ensure your internet connection is stable, and verify that your email account is active and accessible through the web.

If the problem persists, consider removing and re-adding the account or checking for any updates to Outlook that may resolve connectivity issues.

I can retrieve emails from both Frontier accounts from my iPad and cell phone using Outlook mobile. And I can log directly into the accounts on Yahoo on the desktops.

The version of Outlook "new" on my desktop, magically appeared with the frontier email accounts this morning. Links to Word, Excel etc. go to the Cloud versions. So the Outlook is the Cloud version.

The desktop outlook problem appears to relate to having a desktop version of Office on two devices. According to the error message, to use Outlook Classic, one needs a .pst. I can't create a .pst without a subscription to CoPilot it says. Outlook Classic had no issues with the Frontier emails until a couple of days ago. That is true for two different Win 11 desktops. But one has one of the Frontier emails included but can't add the other. The desktop number 2 can't add either frontier email account. The links in the Classic version correctly go to the desktop version of Word, Excel, etc.

The bottom line for me is that I can access all my emails despite the issues. So I don't have any urgency now to fix the problem.

My guess is that I need to uninstall Copilot and Outlook new and desktop Office on the desktops. Them reinstall desktop Office and set up the email accounts fresh. And then install Copilot etc.

I get more interested in switching to Linux every day!

    Dear Rodger Barkus,

Thank you for your post in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand you're suddenly unable to connect your Frontier email accounts to either version of Outlook, receiving an IMAP server error. Given that this was working until recently, the issue is likely related to authentication requirements from the email provider.

An AI-generated answer was provided with some correct IMAP settings, but I'd like to add more specific and up-to-date guidance focused on your scenario of a sudden failure.

Frontier (which uses Yahoo's mail system) may have enforced stricter security, requiring an App Password if you have two-step verification (2FA) enabled on your Yahoo/Frontier account. Regular account passwords often stop working with email clients in these cases.

Please try creating and using an App Password:

    1. Sign into your Frontnet.net / Yahoo Account Security page directly via a web browser.
    2. Navigate to the section for "App Passwords" or "Generate and manage third-party app passwords."
    3. Generate a new, 16-character app password for "Outlook" or "Mail."
    4. In Outlook, update your account password to use this newly generated app password instead of your regular account password.
    5. This is the most common fix for sudden IMAP login errors with Yahoo-based accounts.

Note: Since the setup is managed by your email provider, for specific steps you may need to consult Frontier's support or Yahoo's guide on app passwords, such as: Generate and manage 3rd-party app passwords | Yahoo Help

If the issue persists, please verify these details for us:

    • Have you recently enabled two-step verification on your Frontier/Yahoo account?
    • When you try to add the account, are you selecting IMAP manually or letting Outlook auto-detect?
    • Can you still log into your Frontier email account via the webmail portal at frontier.com/webmail?

We look forward to your response.
