I am transferring previous e-mails from my previous computer (Mac - older Outlook version) and have downloaded the new 365 onto my iMac but it won't let me sign in to outlook - it keeps coming up with this error.

My email address is my business but I am unsure whether I am set up as a business or home? As its saying my business is not registered.

It seems that you are experiencing issues logging into Outlook on your new computer, and the error message indicates that access is denied for the resource. This could be due to several reasons:

    1. Account Type: Since you're unsure whether your account is set up as a business or home, ensure that you are using the correct email address associated with your Microsoft 365 Business account. If your business is not registered, it could lead to access issues.
    2. Autodiscover Settings: If you have migrated your mailbox from an on-premises Exchange Server to Exchange Online and have disabled local Autodiscover options, it may prevent Outlook from retrieving the necessary settings to log in. Ensure that Autodiscover is correctly configured for your account.
    3. Outlook Version: Make sure that you are using the latest version of Outlook. If you are using an older version, consider upgrading to the latest version of Outlook for better compatibility with Microsoft 365.
    4. Troubleshooting: You can run the Classic Outlook Profile Setup troubleshooter to help configure your Microsoft 365 email. This can assist in identifying and resolving issues related to your Outlook profile setup.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, you may need to contact your email administrator for further assistance.

    Dear Martine Payne

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Community. I understand you are having a problem signing into Outlook on your new iMac with a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription and receiving an “Access denied for the resource” error. Please try the following steps:

    1. Confirm License Supports Outlook for Mac
      • Outlook desktop access requires a subscription that includes Office apps (Microsoft 365 Personal or Family). If you previously used a business email, ensure you are signing in with the personal Microsoft account linked to your subscription. Business-only accounts without a valid license for desktop apps will fail to authenticate.
      • See  : Unable to add an account in Outlook for Mac - Microsoft Support
    2. Update Outlook for Mac  Install the latest version (16.81.2 or newer) from the Mac App Store or Microsoft 365 portal. Older builds may block account addition due to licensing checks.
    3. Remove Cached Credentials and Reset Activation
      • Quit Outlook.
      • Navigate to ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office and delete the Identity folder.
      • Sign out of all Office apps, restart the Mac, then sign in again with your Microsoft 365 Personal account.
    4. Check Conditional Access or Disabled Service Principal
      • If you previously used a business account, verify in Microsoft Entra that the service principal for Outlook is enabled. If disabled, enable sign-in for the Microsoft Information Protection API.
