I was doing my homework in iPad. When I was typing, Microsoft Word lagged. I could not use any button, so I screened out. When I came back, the file had lost more than half of my words. How can I get back my words?

To recover your lost words in Microsoft Word on your iPad, you can try the following steps:

    1. Check AutoRecover Files: When you reopen Microsoft Word, it should automatically search for any AutoRecover files. If it finds any, they will appear in the Document Recovery pane. You can double-click on the recovered file to open it and then save it.
    2. Search for Temporary Files: If you suspect that the document was saved as a temporary file, you can search for files with a .tmp extension. However, this option may be more limited on an iPad compared to a PC.
    3. Check OneDrive or SharePoint: If you were saving your document to OneDrive or SharePoint, check the recycle bin in these services to see if an earlier version of your document is available.
    4. Use Version History: If your document was saved to OneDrive, you can check the version history to restore an earlier version of the document.
    5. Restart Word: Sometimes simply restarting the application can prompt Word to recover unsaved documents automatically.

Make sure to enable AutoSave and AutoRecover features in the future to minimize data loss in case of application lag or crashes.

    Hi @student,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum!

First, could you confirm: Was the document saved to OneDrive, Teams Classwork, or stored locally on your iPad? And did you have AutoSave turned on in Word?

In the meantime, here are some steps you can try:

    1. Check Version History (if saved online):

Open Word > File > Info > Version History > select the version you need > Restore or Open.

    2. Look for AutoRecovered files:

Go to File > Recent > check for AutoRecovered versions.

    3. Check OneDrive or Teams:

Sign in > find your file > select Version History > restore the version with your missing content.

To avoid this next time: turn on AutoSave when working on OneDrive or Teams, keep your internet stable, update Word, and save manually after big edits.

    Also, please check this reference:

Recover your Word files and documents

Please note that: if the document was never saved or synced to OneDrive, Teams Classwork, or another cloud service, and AutoSave was turned off, Word cannot create a backup or version history. When the app freezes and closes before saving, any unsaved changes remain only in temporary memory, which is cleared when the app shuts down.

We appreciate your kind patience and understanding that sometimes the initial response may not immediately resolve the issue or there may be some misunderstandings about your scenario, but we would love to hear updates from you and find out further suggestions.

    Best Regards.
